Greetings from CURE100! Earth Month has already begun and Earth Day (April 22) is just around the corner. All our chapters are planning extensive activities that you can read about in this issue of our newsletter. Many of you know someone who has received a COVID vaccine or perhaps you yourself have been jabbed. We wish it would be that easy to start easing the scourge of global warming impacting our planet.  On this 51st Earth Day, let us rededicate ourselves to decarbonizing all human activities no later than 2040, and caring for Mother Earth and all its creatures.

WELCOME CURE100'S NEW BOARD MEMBER

Please help us to welcome Bob DeAngelis, CURE100's newest Board member. Bob, a retired IBMer, was a founding member of Yorktown100. He strongly believes in personal responsibility and loves the approach of using the Carbon Tracker and leveraging the extended team. He has expertise in sustainable home heating and air conditioning systems. Our thanks go out to Steve Bluestone, outgoing Board member, for helping us get started and for all his contributions and support.

IMPACT100 PRESENTATION

CURE100 has been invited to share its story and information about the Carbon Tracker at a virtual Earth Week event hosted by Impact100 Westchester on April 20, 7:00 - 8:15 p.m. The theme of this panel discussion is how we are working to make Westchester a sustainable community.

CROTON100 ACTIVITIES

Croton100 is rearing into action this Earth Month with multiple ongoing activities:
  • Croton100 is running a campaign to oppose the Croton School District's transportation bond proposal ballot to be held on May 18 with a simple campaign slogan: "Say no to diesel, say yes to electric school buses!"
  • Croton100 will announce winners of its art competition on Earth Day, keep an eye on our website, social media posts and the windows of the Black Cow for the beautiful images invoking the theme of this competition “Nature is Us.” A winning entry will be featured in River Journal North!
  • Croton100 is finalizing an array of profiles of Decarbonizing residents and the various ways neighbors are influencing neighbors about sustainability and carbon reduction actions. Keep an eye on Croton100’s website and social media platforms to meet Croton’s Decarbonizing Heroes.
  • With support from Croton100, the Croton Harmon High School is arranging two panels on "Green Careers" on April 23.

OSSINING100 ACTIVITIES

Green Ossining's 10th Annual Earth Day Festival will be a weeklong celebration of activities, partnerships, and offers beginning on Saturday, April 17 through Sunday, April 25, 2021. Determined not to let another year escape, we have pivoted from our usual large-scale in-person event format to a weeklong opportunity of more than 70 activities. These will consist of small socially distanced gatherings as well as online

entertainment and educational experiences. Something for everyone!  We will be offering a special Carbon Tracker Open House on Tuesday, April 20 from 6:15 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.  Daily updates of events can be found at https://www.greenossining.org/earth-day-festival/.

YORKTOWN100 ACTIVITIES

  • Yorktown100 will hold its next Community Meeting on April 12. Our topic is "Sustainable Gardening and Lawn Care." We will focus on steps to create climate-friendly gardens and lawns, which store or trap more greenhouse gas emissions than they generate. We will discuss composting, cover crops, and the overuse
of chemicals and fertilizers. We will suggest ways to prevent lawn mower pollution by using alternatives to gasoline-powered equipment for landscaping and snow removal.
  • Yorktown100 will participate in the "Battle of Yorktown" on Saturday, April 24th, in recognition of the 51st Anniversary of Earth Day, to help Yorktown stay clean and green by picking up unsightly roadside litter. On the same day, we are participating in the Yorktown Repair Café
    at Grace Lutheran Church, 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
  • Yorktown100 also supports the Garden Club of Yorktown's annual plant sale on Saturday, May 8, stressing the importance  of native plants to aid pollinators such as bees, birds, and butterflies.

REMEMBERING JOHN HABIB

John Habib with Patty Buchanan at the Global Climate Strike outside the Blue Pig in Croton September 2019, discussing early incarnations of Croton100
Croton100 mourns the loss of John Habib, who at 58 years old, passed away unexpectedly in March. John was a deep-rooted Crotonite, an early and stalwart supporter of Croton100, climate action advocate, public service leader, optimist, uniter and all-round joyful spirit. We commit to carrying on his work to lead Croton and the interconnected world in which we live to make necessary rapid reductions in carbon emissions to stabilize our shared climate and ecosystems.
