Making the case for clean energy innovation

In this edition of the Mission Innovation (MI) newsletter, we share plans for the Sixth Mission Innovation Ministerial (MI-6) hosted virtually by Chile from May 31-June 6 and profile recent commitments at the US Leaders Summit on Climate including a peek at the first Mission topics to be launched at MI-6. We look at achievements and future endeavours of MI’s Innovation Challenges, whilst the Champions Corner features the Indian 2020 MI Champion Purnima Jaliha and UK Champion Michaela Kendall.

MI-6: the digital, diverse and dynamic launch of Mission Innovation 2.0
The Sixth Mission Innovation Ministerial (MI-6) will be the stand out clean energy innovation event of 2021 bringing together Ministers, CEOs, high-level experts, thought leaders, innovators and advocates to celebrate the successes of the first phase of Mission Innovation and launch its ambitious second phase. MI-6 will be held virtually between Monday, May 31, and Sunday, June 6 through an online platform purpose-made to create an exciting event.
 

 

US announces renewed commitment to Mission Innovation
Multiple world leaders highlighted their commitment to Mission Innovation and strengthening clean energy innovation cooperation at the Leaders Summit on Climate last week. The US announced that it will seek to host the 7th MI Ministerial and 13th Clean Energy Ministerial in 2022. The announcement was made as part of a series of six new global initiatives announced by the US throughout Earth Week as part of President Biden’s Leaders Summit on Climate. What’s next for MI’s Innovation Challenges
Over the past four and a half years, MI members and partners have come together through the Innovation Challenges (ICs), focusing on the research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) of technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase energy security, and create new opportunities for clean economic growth. The Mission Possible Partnership – Making Industry Decarbonization possible
The Mission Possible Partnership (MPP), launched at the World Economic Forum’s Davos Agenda, brings together a critical mass of industries with their customers, suppliers, capital providers, and regulators to forge a common path to net-zero transformation for seven of the world’s most carbon-intensive sectors. Champions Corner
Dr. Purnima Jalihal has coordinated many first-ever projects in desalination and has helped transforming the lives of small island communities. She is now scaling up this technology and intends to power desalination plants using ocean energy. Purnima works at the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) in India, where she heads the Energy and Fresh Water group.
 
      
Dr Michaela Kendall, the UK’s Mission Innovation Champion, is the co-inventor of microtubular solid oxide fuel cells and is chief executive of Birmingham-based Adelan, one of the world’s first fuel cell businesses. Adelan has attracted substantial inward investment to the UK to develop hydrogen technologies and is a pioneer of the hydrogen economy.
      

Clean energy innovation headlines
  • IEA report “Global Energy Review 2021” sees global energy-related CO2 emissions rising by 1.5 billion tonnes in 2021, driven by a strong rebound in demand for coal in electricity generation.
  • Energy and climate leaders from around the world pledge clean energy action at the IEA-COP26 Net Zero Summit.
  • According to IRENA’s “Renewable Capacity Statistics 2021”, the world added more than 260 GW of renewable capacity last year and beating previous record by almost 50%.
  • IEA-EPO (European Patent Office) study “Patents and the energy transition” highlights the need to accelerate innovation in clean energy technologies to meet climate goals.
  • Patrick Child, Chair of MI, discusses how Mission Innovation drives political, large scale investor and industrial agendas to achieve net zero on Decarb Connect’s latest podcast.

Global Cooling Prize: Grand Award Ceremony
During the Grand Award Ceremony, the winner(s) of the Global Cooling Prize will be announced and awarded $1 million to support the commercialization of their technology. The Ceremony will feature profiles on each finalist team, videos of the Prize's journey, fireside conversations with coalition partners, and special remarks from influential leaders tuning in from around the world. The Ceremony will also highlight what comes next as we Race to Zero in the cooling sector in the lead up to COP26. MI Chair Patrick Child will join the discussions. MI Members can watch the ceremony live through Facebook Live.

Climate Action Transition Summit: Industry
The global industrial sector accounts for roughly 30% of CO2 emissions. Demand for steel, cement, chemicals, and precious metals is only set to increase. With nations setting ambitious net-zero targets, decarbonisation of these heavy industries has to become a priority. The Industry Transition Summit brings together key stakeholders from across the industry, policy, technology, regulation and investment spectrums who are committed to transforming the hard to abate sectors. MI Members can register to the event for free.

Reuters Events: Hydrogen 2021
Reuters Events: Hydrogen 2021 will connect key industry stakeholders with the critical information and connections they need for expansion. Over two days and in the run up to the event, we will unravel government support, deep dive into existing projects, hear from the value chain and build the hydrogen business model. Mission Innovation are excited to be an insight partner for the event.

INNOVATE4CLIMATE (I4C)
INNOVATE4CLIMATE (I4C), hosted by the World Bank Group, is an annual global conference on climate finance, climate investment and climate markets. Launched in 2017, I4C brings together thought leaders interested in linking climate innovation with investment opportunities – transforming dialogue into action. The 2021 I4C high-level plenaries will include global voices from the public and private sectors and civil society from around the world showcasing how to achieve a resilient and low-carbon future.

Climate Action Transition Summit: Energy
As the backbone of the future green economy, the energy sector and our global energy systems must prepare for the next phase of the transition allowing the electrification and decarbonisation of entire industries, sectors, and regions to support the global green economy. The Energy Transition Summit is set to ask the critical questions as the energy sector prepares to take the spotlight at COP26 this November. MI Members can register to the event for free.

12th Clean Energy (CEM12) and 6th Mission Innovation Ministerial (MI-6)
Chile is hosting CEM12/MI-6, which will be held virtually through an online platform designed and purpose-made to create an event that is diverse and dynamic. Through a weeklong schedule of side events, podcasts, trigger talks, high-level panels and fireside chats with leaders and innovators in the international clean energy community, the Ministerials will showcase the solutions to tackling climate change already on offer as well as what those in the future will need to provide. The Launch of the second phase of MI, including the new Mission and Platform initiatives, on 2 June, as well as a range of side events, will be open to the public. Decarb Connect North America
Decarb Connect North America champions the strategies & solutions that can fast track decarbonisation in the toughest-to-abate sectors. Join hundreds of industrials, investors, technologists, market experts and policy influencers to explore the business models and competitive models for achieving decarbonization. Mission Innovation is partnering with Decarb Connect to support the network and expertise-sharing that will help policy makers, investors and energy-intensive companies to be inspired and energised as they adapt and deploy their net zero plans.

Mission Innovation is a global initiative of 24 countries and the European Union to dramatically accelerate global clean energy innovation. As part of the initiative, participating countries have committed to seek to double their governments’ clean energy research and development investments over five years, while encouraging greater levels of private sector investment in transformative clean energy technologies. These additional resources will dramatically accelerate the availability of the advanced technologies that will define a future global energy mix that is clean, affordable, and reliable.
