Leeds Autism AIM Monthly Update: May 2021

Hello and welcome to our latest monthly newsletter! In this update from Leeds Autism AIM, part of The Advonet Group, we have news on:

Online Groups timetable: May 2021
We're holding Peer Support sessions on the 4th and 18th, both from 5pm-6pm. Our Women-Aligned Group is on the 11th from 5:30pm-6:30pm.
Our Gaming Group on Discord will meet on the 25th, while our Coproduction Group is on the earlier date of the 13th. Our Creatives Group will be on the 28th at 3pm.

The Health Inequalities Project:
Welcome Jane!
The Health Inequalities Project is a new project AIM are running jointly with The Light Surgery and Leeds Student Medical Practice Local Care Partnership. Work begins on the project this month.
To help run it, we have appointed Jane Stark as a Deputy Manager. Jane will be working alongside Pesha Thornton, who is also now a Deputy Manager, to oversee its' work. The Health Inequalities Project aims to:
  • Ensure the needs of autistic patients are met
  • Give autistic patients a say in how the surgeries' services are run
  • Involve autistic people more in the GP services they use
Please note that this project is only for people who are registered with those two GP surgeries. For further information, please email the AIM team at leedsautismaim@advonet.org.uk.
Job Vacancy: AIM Coordinator
To step in for Pesha, we are hiring a Coordinator to help make sure that the AIM service runs smoothly. The role involves organising Hub and post-diagnostic sessions, providing information, signposting and resources and working to improve access to services for autistic adults.

Accessible Information Guide for neurodivergent people: Out now!
Last month, during Autism Acceptance Month, we published a free guide to making information accessible for neurodivergent people. This covers topics including websites, digital documents, meetings and printed materials like leaflets. The guide covers autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and ADHD.

Coproduction Group to look at
new health app
Our monthly Coproduction Group will be looking at a new app being developed by the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Health and Care Partnership. It aims to help remove barriers when accessing health and other services for children and young people.
The group will be meeting on Zoom on Thursday 13th May from 5:30pm-7pm and is free to attend.

Free volunteer mentor training:
Starting this weekend
We are looking for people to become volunteer mentors with Leeds Autism AIM and have some free training available, starting this Saturday! Mentors are paired with an autistic adult to help them set and achieve life goals and overcome barriers.
The training takes place on Saturday 8th May and Saturday 15th May from 10:30am-3:30pm. Please click on the button below for further information.

News in brief
Coronavirus restrictions easing
In the past few weeks, some lockdown restrictions have gradually been eased. Now, you are able to visit more shops and meet people from other households outdoors, with some restrictions on numbers.

Virtual Trans Pride: Tickets available
This month, TransLeeds will be hosting a virtual Trans Pride series of online events in Leeds, including a virtual parade, talks and a performance night. It is taking place in lieu of a parade that was held annually before the pandemic.
The events will run from Friday 21st May to Sunday 23rd May. Each event is free to attend. To book tickets, please click on the link below.

What is Health Complaints Advocacy?
The Advonet Group, the charity that Leeds Autism AIM is part of, have a free, independent Health Complaints Advocacy service. It is there to help you make a complaint about a health service you have accessed. The Health Complaints team have made a short video explaining how the service can help you to make your voice heard.
