What We've Been Up to!

Centennial Arts Management Program
Many thanks to Jasmine Vanstone and the Centennial Arts Management Program for connecting us with the future art leaders of tomorrow!

Jasmine just finished her 7-week internship with Art Starts, working with our Program Director, Nicole Peña. She handled many of the logistics for our programming team, created on-boarding and evaluation documents, and interviewed our program facilitators.
"Jasmine was a pleasure to work with and was an invaluable addition to the Art Starts' team. She had an intuitive ability to know what the organization needed and did her work willingly and professionally."
- Nicole Peña, Program Director

We wish her well as she finishes the program and heads into this next chapter.

The Philanthropist Feature

Art Starts was one of the featured organizations in The Philanthropist's latest article: 'Making the most of it: Turning to arts and crafts through the pandemic'.

This article bridges conversations between Concordia University Art Hives/Les Ruches d'Art, SCYAP Art Centre, and Saanich Parks & Recreation about how the arts can be used to connected with isolated community members and foster a shared sense of purpose.

The power of art on cognitive and mental health benefits is huge, and as our executive Director, Bruce Pitkin, states in the article:

“It’s great that the power of art and craft to heal and give hope is being acknowledged. We’ve known it for a long time, so it’s great that there’s a spotlight shining on it now. But we wish [the increased attention] would translate into more funding. We need more funding.”

National Volunteer Week 2021

In honour of national volunteer week, we would like to highlight the contributions of our amazing board members: Cindy Ball, Denise Dias, Dorena Tu, Jackie Tavares, Jayden Falola, Jennifer Phelan, Juanita Lee-Garcia, Ricky Park, Sonja Torbica, Solange Alexander, and Sharon Merwin.

Our Board Chair, Jackie Tavares, is an innovative, results-oriented leader with experience in strategic planning. Her expertise in change management has helped Art Starts in creating our new 5-year strategic plan.

This year's theme was 'the value of one, the power of many' so we asked Jackie how every individual plays a role in serving the greater good:

"One of my favourite Ted Talks is Drew Dudley's 'Everyday Leadership'. In it, Drew talks about how leaders create 'lollipop moments' for others. That's exactly how I see our role as members of the Art Starts Board...creating lollipop moments for artists, program participants and staff. As a Board Member, we are often a step removed from the actual work on-the-ground so we don't often see the impact we may have. However, every member of our Board - individually and collectively - plays such an important role!"
- Jackie Tavares, Board Chair

Thank you to Jackie and all the board members and volunteers who so selflessly dedicate their time to helping meaningful causes.
