Journalists interested in building careers reporting on science, health and the environment are eligible to apply for new cross-disciplinary fellowships designed to provide training, networking, mentoring, new sources and story ideas, while allowing them to stay at their jobs. The year-long National Science-Health-Environment Reporting Fellowships are open to early-career journalists interested in covering any or all of the three fields. Applications are due May 10, 2021.

Six talented journalists passionate about science, health, the environment, and social justice have been awarded prestigious Taylor/Blakeslee University Fellowships for 2021–22 from the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing. Each will receive a $5,000 academic year award to support graduate training in science writing. Their selection brings to 178 the number of science writers aided by CASW’s graduate fellowships since 1981.

Freelance science writer and editor Robin Lloyd (@RobinLloyd99) has been elected president of the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing. “Recent years have underscored what CASW board members have known throughout the organization’s 60-year history — that science writing and science journalism are indispensable to society and must be strengthened,” she said.
Elected during the annual meeting of the Council’s board of directors on April 16, Lloyd succeeds Alan Boyle (@b0yle), who stepped down after eight years as president and five additional years of service as treasurer and vice president. Boyle — who is contributing editor for GeekWire and maintains the Cosmic Log science blog — has been a CASW board member since 2004.
“The past few years have brought huge transitions for the science writing profession, and for CASW as well,” Boyle said. “I’ve been lucky to have dedicated and savvy folks like Robin on our board, and on our staff.”

A couple years ago, CASW board members looking at diversity issues in science writing identified an opportunity to expand our programming and outreach toward a wider spectrum of writers and journalists.
The idea was to reach writers who cover science, health and the environment but who do not necessarily identify as science writers nor attend conferences and other events hosted by CASW and professional societies in our field.
