Boone Lake on the Rise & Cleanup Day a Success!

Much to the delight of area residents, the water is rising at Boone Lake. While the cutoff wall contractor has demobilized, the project now turns to the next phase of construction: the flood wall and crest restoration. Residents should see that work taking place this summer.

Meanwhile, the water is up, and TVA crews and volunteers were hard at work during a rainy annual Boone Lake Association cleanup day on April 24. Volunteers collected seven tons of trash including 492 TVA-donated trash bags. Also hauled away were 67 tires and 72 huge blocks of styrofoam.

Expect to see sluicing at Boone Dam during an upcoming maintenance outage.

Boone Sluicing for Maintenance and Upgrades

Boone Hydro Plant will have all generating units in a maintenance outage May 10-June 2. According to Boone Hydro Plant Manager Travis Christian, upgrades to plant equipment will also be completed. “These upgrades and maintenance will help TVA continue to provide safe and reliable power generation from the Boone Hydro Plant,” Christian said. “During this timeframe, with no water flow from the turbines, the plant will be sluicing water at the dam to ensure proper flows are maintained and that proper pool levels are controlled.” He said that sluice gate changes could be frequent during this timeframe depending on the needed outflows.

Information about the lake levels and gate changes can be found on the TVA Lake Levels website or TVA Lake Info app.

BLA Board Member Frank Hahne Catches “The Big One” on Boone Lake

When we saw BLA board member Frank Hahne’s monster catch on social media we asked him to share his story and his photo with us:

“I grew up salt-water fishing all around Savannah and Tybee Island and loving it. I am chagrined to admit that I am a novice fresh water fisherman—I even enrolled in the ETSU fly fishing course to break the ice! But since retiring and joining Boone Lake Association’s (BLA) board as a volunteer I have become a Boone Lake lifer. This fish, a Tennessee Trophy Striped Bass, at 40”and 30 pounds, was my very first fish caught in Boone Lake. I could not have done it without the help of Derrick Paduch of Modern Woodman, who is one of the major sponsors of BLA and our clean-up activities. Derrick shared his Boone Lake experience and time to give me this life-long memory (and bragging rights with my grandkids).”

TVA, in partnership with Bristol Tennessee Essential Services and Bicentennial Volunteers Incorporated (a TVA retiree organization), recently awarded Innovation Academy, in Sullivan County $5,000 for a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education project. Teacher Brandee Bridges used the funds to purchase Spheros robots that students will code to learn about the Silk Road, combining art, history and STEM. Boone Dam project leaders have guest taught at the Innovation Academy middle school, located just down the street from Boone Dam.

The grant award is a part of $800,000 in competitive STEM grants awarded to nearly 200 schools across TVA’s seven-state service territory.

Both BrightRidge and Bristol Tennessee Essential Services brought their electric vehicles to the Earth Day event at the Pinnacle in Bristol.

Drive Electric: TVA Partners with BTES, BrightRidge for Earth Day Electric Vehicle Celebration in Bristol

Along with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, TVA teamed with BrightRidge and Bristol Tennessee Essential Services to celebrate Earth Day in a very earth-friendly way. They took part in the DriveElectricTN Earth Day celebration at the Pinnacle in Bristol on on April 17. Electric vehicle owners showcased their carbon-free cars with a drive and ride opportunity. TVA and TDEC recently announced a network of fast charging stations along Tennessee’s major corridors, furthering DriveElectricTN’s goal of 200,000 EVs in Tennessee by 2028.

“The power TVA generates is nearly 60 percent carbon-free and is getting cleaner; increased adoption of EVs in the Valley will therefore build on TVA’s efforts and will assist in substantially reducing carbon emissions,” said Northeast Customer Relations Manager Chris Quillen.
