California to end social distancing, business capacity limits in June, officials say
California businesses will be able to open their doors on June 15 without the COVID-19 capacity and social distancing restrictions that have been in place for more than a year, according to the state’s top public health officials. Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said California is on track to meet the reopening criteria Gov. Gavin Newsom announced in April. On Saturday, another milestone was reached as federal officials said half of Californians 18 and older are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

SBA to open up $25B EIDL Advance cash grant program to more small businesses
The U.S. Small Business Administration plans to expand eligibility for its $25 billion cash grant programs to significantly more businesses. The SBA’s Targeted Economic Injury Disaster Loan Advance grant program, which provides up to $10,000 to eligible small businesses, and its Supplemental Targeted Advance program, which provides follow-up grants of up to $5,000, have both been available only to businesses that had applied for an EIDL up to Dec. 27, 2020.

Sacramento could require all new buildings to go electric. That has some restaurant owners worried.
State officials plan to reopen California in June, putting an end to social distancing and capacity limits on restaurants. But the future remains uncertain for restaurants like Duong's, which rely on natural gas. On June 1, Sacramento city council could adopt a new ordinance, which would require new buildings to use electricity as their source of power.

As the Sacramento region continues its path to full reopening and recovery, many local small businesses and restaurants are working to ramp up hiring efforts but facing a shortage of interested applicants as compared to the number of job openings available. Sacramento’s Central City PBIDs (property business improvement districts) are collaborating to connect local job openings with interested candidates while also reducing access barriers along the way. Now through June 16, 2021, an outreach campaign is underway to promote businesses that are hiring, offering on-the-spot, drop-in interviews, and/or accepting job applications.

Restaurateurs on the Pandemic
During the pandemic, Michael Hargis proved to be one of the most agile and innovative restaurateurs in town. He convinced the city to close a portion of 20th Street to traffic in order to move LowBrau beer hall to the street. He turned meat-centric Block Butcher Bar into a vegan sandwich takeout spot, used a delivery service to boost Milk Money’s doughnut business by more than 100 percent and opened a pizza-and-wine “streetery” near the Ice Blocks.

Dollar Tree site near R Street marketed for new tenants
A retail building near the R Street Corridor in Sacramento is being marketed for a new direction, with the current tenant planning to exit by year's end after a decade there. Dollar Tree has chosen not to renew its lease at 1235 S St., a 9,100-square-foot, single-story building, according to Scott Kingston of Turton Commercial Real Estate.
