The Fair Treatment campaign is an initiative of Uniting and the Uniting Church Synod of NSW/ACT following resolutions passed at Synod in 2016. The campaign aims to win two things: 1. increased funding for treatment and 2. the decriminalisation (remove criminal penalties) of the personal use and possession of small amounts of illicit drugs.
Engadine Uniting Church hosts NSW Attorney General for discussion about drug law reform
On April 14th, Engadine Uniting Church invited their local member, Lee Evans MP, and NSW Attorney General, Mark Speakman, for a special forum about drug law reform. Members of the local community, faith groups and community organisations gathered to put their questions to Mr Speakman and urge his Government to modernise drug laws that value people at its centre. It's wonderful to see our congregations taking this initiative. If you're interested in doing something similar, get in touch with us Alexandra Hogan Social Justice Advocate email:ahogan@uniting.org
The Fair Treatment campaign is part of the radical tradition of the church, an act of Christian service and integral to Christian discipleship. It is fundamental to our mission of welcoming people exactly as they are. The involvement of congregations and Church members in the Long Walk to Treatment in 2018, the screenings of our ‘Half A Million Steps’ documentary in 2019, the win for funding for a Dubbo rehab last year and ongoing engagement with MPs on this issue is incredibly valuable and we’d love to welcome you all to this workshop to see how else we can work together!
You may be interested in an upcoming workshop on decriminalisation. Full details follow below along with the link for registration.
What is decriminalisation? How would this work in practice? What are the options for changing the law?
We all want laws that are fair, sensible and in line with community values. Join us for a special online workshop on 12th May from 6.30pm to discuss the issue of decriminalisation and why the Fair Treatment campaign is advocating for this.
We will be joined by experts in the field who contributed to our discussion paper, ‘Possession and Use of Drugs: Options for Changing the Law’.
This workshop will include a summary of the discussion paper, interactive small group discussions, an opportunity to put your questions to our invited guests and an exciting call to action!
