We love our rivers

At CBCity we love our rivers! They’re an integral part of our city providing important habitat for plants and animals – and for humans to enjoy too!

Join the Riverside Scavenge event this coming Saturday 1 May at Rosedale Reserve, Croydon Park and help add to our tally of river rubbish removed at community events this year:

  • 4,400kg removed from the Cooks and Georges rivers through our Ocean Crusaders partnership
  • 150 volunteers pulled out 700kg of rubbish at the Cooks River Paddle Against Plastic
  • 86 volunteers collected 267kg of rubbish at the Georges River Paddle Against Plastic

Thanks to everyone involved in these clean ups with a special thank you to our various event partners the Georges Riverkeeper, the River Canoe Club and Seaside Scavenge.

Is your home winter ready?

We’ve all heard the saying “it’s easier to put on clothes to get warm than it is to dress down to cool down”, but despite this we still end up spending significant amounts on energy bills to keep our homes warm in winter.

A combination of rising energy prices and spending more time inside during cold days and nights often means that keeping your home warm can lead to huge electricity bills. That’s why heating your home efficiently is so important. Now is the time to prepare your home for the upcoming winter months.

Top tips to maximise efficient heating in your home are:

  • Sealing all the draughty gaps around your home, to stop cold air leaking in and warm air leaking out
  • Ensuring windows have coverings such as curtains and pelmets to stop the cold glass radiating into the home
  • Having your ceiling insulation checked for gaps and correct thickness
  • Arrange a maintenance check for your air-conditioner or heater and clean the filters, to ensure it’s working at its optimal level
  • Make sure you are heating to 18-20 degrees for a comfortable temperature that won’t require as much energy. Each degree higher corresponds to about a 10% increase in running cost!

For independent and personalised advice on preparing your home for the winter months, contact the energy advisors at CBCity community energy advice service where you can get a free 20 minute energy consultation.

Delivered through the Australian Energy Foundation, they can identify warming solutions for your home and if requested, can also arrange an obligation free quote for draught proofing, window films, insulation and reverse cycle air-conditioners. Visit aef.com.au or call 1300 23 68 55.

Community Battery for Mount Lewis
A community solar battery was unveiled last week in Mount Lewis. This is one of three community batteries installed as part of a trial being run by Ausgrid. The battery will allow residents to store their excess solar power and draw power from the battery as required.

This will provide savings on energy costs (between $50 and $250 a year) and allow more renewable energy into the grid. The battery allows multiple households in the area to share a storage system for the excess energy generated by solar panels.

The location was chosen due to the high percentage of houses in the area with solar. Since 2013 there has been a 71% increase in solar install in the city, with over 11,750 PV installs in the 19-20 financial year.
