Born in New Zealand in what is known colloquially as the “deep south”, it is fitting that Matt found his feet as songwriter in a genre of music that was born in the Deep South of the USA - Americana. Whilst these far flung regions have little in common in terms of climate - the former sometimes bitterly cold where the latter is sultry heat - they both share a rich musical history, and Matt absorbed both growing up. Matt's debut 'The Messenger' released in 2009 was produced by multi-ARIA award-winner Nash Chambers and featuring Jim Moginie of Midnight Oil and iconic Australian country artist Bill Chambers, it was recorded at the legendary Sing Sing Studios in Melbourne and released on Liberation Records. The album introduced Matt and in many ways alt country to many people for the first time in Australia.

It was however Matt's latest self produced album, ‘Break Rattle And Roll ‘, which ranged from Stones-esque blues rock and roll to hushed heartbreak that truly resonated with fans and critics alike and went on to win the prestigious Music Victoria Award for Best Country album. Revered Americana blog ‘Post To Wire’ describing the album, as “one of the finest alt-country albums of the year, full of consummate songwriting and life affirming rock ’n’ roll."

The trust receives funding from Creative New Zealand as well as support from Central Lakes Trust, Community Trust of Southland, Interislander, Otago Community Trust, Rata Foundation and the Southern Trust. AOTNZ liaises with local arts councils, repertory theatres and community groups to bring the best of musical and theatrical talent to country districts. Waste Not Want Not by Sarah Burtscher
“New Zealanders throw away 157,389 tonnes of food a year. That is equivalent to 271 jumbo jets of food that has to go somewhere to rot, instead of being eaten.”- lovefoodhatewaste.co.nz
Sarah Burtscher has published a book to combat this waste. Her new cookbook, Waste Not Want Not,is based on the 10 top foods thrown out in New Zealand which are bread, leftovers, oranges and mandarins, apples, bananas, potatoes, poultry, rice, lettuce and beef. With 1.7 billion dollars of food wasted a year, this book gives the general household 80 fridge-cleaning recipes and 40-plus tips and tricks for minimising food waste and maximising flavour. The recipes feature ingredients that can be found in most home fridges, pantries and fruit bowls.
To add to the local flavour of this book, Jet Campbell from Fairlie is responsible for the outstanding photography and design of the book.
A Taste Without Waste celebration for the launch of this beautiful and laudable book will be held at Jack Rabbit Cafe in Lake Tekapo hosted by Sarah Burtscher and Wilma from Petronella’s Bookstore. At this event Sarah will speak about the genesis of her book and there will be nibbles from her cookbook to inspire and encourage us all to stop the food waste.
