Bealtaine at Home 2021


Bealtaine is a month long festival in May featuring performances, exhibitions, discussions, workshops and readings by artists working in different art forms all over Ireland. Bealtaine Festival engages people to foster and inspire creativity among older people and to promote the skills, experiences and exposure that can lead to a rich creative life. dlr Libraries, dlr Arts Office and dlr Community section have a huge selection of events to choose from, including dance, storytelling, art, conversational Irish, craft and cooking to name but a few of many online events on offer.

Press Photographer of the Year 2021

Photography Talk with James Crombie
Monday 10 May, 7.00pm

To coincide with the stunning Press Photographer of the Year Awards 2021 exhibition currently on display outdoors in the grounds of dlr LexIcon, we are pleased to announce that we have programmed a free online talk with James Crombie (INPHO Photography), this year’s Press Photographer of the Year 2021. Many of you will have seen the RTÉ video highlighting the exhibition.

Now it’s your chance to hear more about how some of these incredible photos are created! Join James Crombie who will be introduced by Paul Sherwood, President of the Press Photographers Association of Ireland for further insights on creating the perfect photo.

The exhibition, featuring 1st and 2nd prizewinners in all the categories will continue at dlr LexIcon until early June. Full details of all winning and short-listed entries can be found at www.ppai.ie

Ireland of the Welcomes- Recent Donation


dlr Libraries wish to thank Vivien Igoe for her recent donation of a large number of the periodical "Ireland of the Welcomes". The magazine was published from 1952 and aimed to encourage tourism to Ireland by showcasing the history, heritage, culture and traditions of the island.

Superbly designed by Dutch graphic designer Jan de Fouw who came to Ireland for a few weeks and remained there for the rest of his life, the magazine also boasted important editors such as Michael Gorman, Elizabeth Healy, Peter Harbison and Letitia Pollard.

An index for the magazines is included and they will be available for perusal when dlr LexIcon re-opens.

Kite-Making and decorating workshop

Life Beyond Lockdown - a series of talks with Psychotherapist Stella O'Malley


We are delighted to welcome Stella O' Malley back to dlr Libraries for 2 talks as we come out of lockdown.

Coming out of Lockdown - Managing anxiety, Renewing well-being

Many of us have been severely impacted by Covid and as we edge towards the easing of restrictions and greater freedoms, there are associated anxieties which may get in our way. Stella will help us work thorough this anxiety and show ways in which we can reconnect with the joy in our lives. 

How Lockdown has impacted Teenagers and Young Adults
Monday 24 May, 7.30pm 

The impact of Covid on teenagers and young adults has often been overlooked and yet life has been very challenging for this cohort. This talk will focus on strategies that can help young people to manage their anxieties and emotions.

Music Makers with Music Generation dlr

Sing your way into a new week with Carrie from Music Generation dlr in a musical, storyful session live on Zoom!  With improvised instruments or whatever you have to hand at home, preschoolers can join in and experiment with sound while enjoying some of our favourite stories read by library staff.  This session will be delivered via Zoom and may be booked by emailing dalkeylib@dlrcoco.ie

Need to Read Podcast

Writer Eva Kenny is our latest podcast guest and she discussed contemporary Irish women writers and the themes that occupy them. This discussion is based on a course she is currently teaching in the Irish Writers' Centre.

Magazines and Comics have moved from RB Digital

Digital services users may have noticed a change in how you access some of our online services. Comics and Magazines are now accessible through the Overdrive or Libby apps and via an Internet browser.

SeaWonder Workshops for Schools

Are you a teacher of 3rd-5th class in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown?
dlr Libraries, in partnership with WonderFest, are looking for 4 local schools to participate in our exciting SeaWonder Creative Workshops. Each school will have the chance to attend 3 workshops in total; an introductory session, a poetry workshop, and an art workshop, all coordinated by experienced workshop facilitators, poet Lucinda Jacob and illustrator Margaret Anne Suggs.

Workshops are free of charge and delivered to your whiteboard using zoom or similar and they take place on Friday 7 May, Monday 17 May and Tuesday 18 May, all at 10am each morning for approx. 1 hour.

The work generated in these workshops will be submitted to dlr Libraries for the SeaWonder Exhibition which will be on view outside dlr LexIcon for Cruinniú na nÓg 2021. We will showcase these poems and art created especially by children for children!
Please email dlrlexiconlib@dlrcoco.ie by midday on Friday 30 April. Schools will be notified by Tuesday 4 May.

Online Postal Printing

As a short-term alternative to the usual public printing service at our libraries, SurfBox have developed a new online postal printing service. This is a fully remote printing service, allowing users to send documents from home and receive their printing by post. Printing is charged at the same rate as users would pay in the library and postage is charged at An Post standard postal rates. Once orders are received before 3pm, users will receive their prints by next business day’s post.

To access this new service, simply go to the SurfBox website , click on Online Postal Printing and follow the instructions. All information submitted for postal printing will be processed in compliance with GDPR regulations and SurfBox’s data protection policy.

Neven Maguire Cooking Demos


Afterschool Cook-Out 
Thursday 6 May, 3.30pm


Join Chef Neven Maguire for a demonstration and his ideas on what to prepare for those hungry scholars on weekday afternoons.  The whole family can get involved in making these recipes whether at home in the afternoons, with grandparents, or in the evening and weekend. From deliciously fluffy pancakes to yummy meatballs, we guarantee your taste buds will be tempted!  This session will be delivered via Zoom.

Join Chef Neven Maguire for his top tips and recipes for a super barbecue feast, making the most of staying home this summer. National Drawing Day – events for schools

One Point Perspective with White Doodle Workshops via Zoom

Friday 14 May
9.30-10.30am  &11am-12pm
Suitable for 1st - 4th class


Have fun drawing and learning how to draw perspective. One point perspective is based on the concept that the lines and shapes in a drawing can be located in reference to a single line, called the horizon line, and a single point, called the vanishing point. We will take a look at how one point perspective can be used to create a sense of depth in a drawing. We will learn the concept of near, hear and far in this popular fun workshop. 

Students will need:
White A4 paper
Pencil & rubber, long ruler
Colouring pencils or crayons
Black sharpie or marker
