May 2021                                                                                   Vol 5 Issue 7
President's Message

Is everyone ready for May showers?!? As long as they bring lots of beautiful flowers, count me in!  May also brings us the Air and Sea Show on May 8 and 9, which is always a lot of fun. Let’s  cross our fingers for lovely weather.

We had the pleasure of hosting Yvonne Chen, Director of Private Sector Engagement ECPAT-USA and Reneé Trincanello, CEO Covenant House Florida, to educate us on human trafficking from both a national and local perspective at our April 12 meeting. They provided us valuable information regarding human trafficking risk factors, businesses that unknowingly contribute to the problem and what has been done and continues to be done to help eradicate human trafficking. We are grateful to them for sharing their knowledge with us and I hope all of you who attended will share what you learned with your family, friends, business associates and the communities you serve as we can make a significant impact by bringing awareness to this issue.

I am excited to hear about all the great things happening in Fort Lauderdale from City of Fort Lauderdale Commissioner, Dr. Ben Sorensen, at our May meeting, Monday, May 10, at noon. Don’t miss it and be sure to invite friends, family and business associates who would like to be “in the know.”

Our Scholarship Chair, Maureen Dinnen, has been working hard in this very unusual year to assist our applicants as they struggle to obtain transcripts and other materials that have not been as easily obtainable as they have been in the past. Maureen has kindly requested that everyone obtain donations for a special Scholarship Silent Auction we plan to hold in June for the benefit of our scholarship recipients. Let’s all do our part to show our support!

Finally, please review the nominations for the 2021-2022 Executive Board in the newsletter. We will be seeking approval of the slate at our June meeting. We have assembled a great group of ladies to close out 2021 and lead our organization into 2022. If you are not on the Board but are interested in becoming involved, please let us know. We are always looking for volunteers for our various committees and events.

I look forward to connecting with you soon.

With warm regards,

Vivian Fazio

It is with great pleasure that I announce that I will graduate this May.
I am excited to be a Nova Southeastern University Masters in Public Administration graduate! I will surely share a photo from my commencement ceremony.

I continue to work full-time at the City of Coconut Creek and am gaining experience in my local government field.

Thank you again to the scholarship committee and BWA members for being by my side during my academic journey. I could not have done it without you. I am forever grateful.

The Broward Public Library Foundation is presenting LitLIVE!, a free virtual event, on Friday, May 14, featuring conversation with two women of color, authors Kaitlyn Greenidge and Kirstin Valdez Quade. The moderator is Library Foundation Board Chair Nila Do Simon.

Greenidge’s book, Libertie, is an unforgettable story set in Reconstruction-era Brooklyn about one young Black girl’s attempt to find a place where she can be fully, and only, herself. The novel was selected as a March LibraryReads Selection and was featured on many “Most-Anticipated Books” lists.

The Five Wounds, a debut novel by Quade, paints a picture of families in New Mexico with long and proud lineages struggling with poverty and a deadly drug epidemic.  Quade is also the author of a book of short stories, Night at the Fiestas, winner of the National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Prize and many other awards.

The event, sponsored by Nova Southeastern University, is from 6 to 7 p.m. To RSVP, visit bplfoundation.org/virtual-litlive-2021.  Once registered, guests will receive a confirmation email with the Zoom link to the event.

Dear Fellow BWA Colleagues,
I am a person who believes in giving back, and I’ve been given the opportunity to do something BIG! The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is funding the fight against cancer and they have been doing a remarkable job.  Since 2017, 55 of the 65 treatments passed by the FDA were funded by LLS!
I am excited to announce that my goal is to raise $50,000 for LLS through the Fort Lauderdale Man & Woman of the Year campaign.  My team (Walker Warriors) will be raising as many donations as possible over the next few weeks to help end blood cancer.  I am viewing this challenge as a way to honor my parents (John and Martha Walker) who have passed away due to cancer.
I invite you to join my efforts by making a donation and by passing this message on to others who will fund the fight against cancer.  The deadline for donations is June 10, 2021.

How to give:
  1. On-line donations: Visit https://pages.lls.org/mwoy/sfl/ftl21/kgossr.
  2. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.  If interested, please feel free to reach out to me directly: 954-695-6512 or kristen@kwglaw.net.
