Dear friends of APTN,

We hope you are safe and healthy as it's been another busy month, with the end of some of our campaigns like TDOV and COVID 19 Trans Resilience, UNAIDS TDOV "The Mirror" campaign and some inspirations for upcoming IDAHOT by May17.org.

Here's a round up of the latest updates of April and upcoming events.

APTN Team

Transgender Day of Visibility 2021

On the #TransgenderDayofVisibility, APTN shared findings from its recent research that aims to explore the various conversion therapy practices widespread in #India, #Indonesia, #Malaysia, and #SriLanka. This evidence-generating project aimed to explore how trans and gender diverse people in these countries have been subjected to conversion therapy practices by documenting their personal narratives and lived experiences. Further, it sought to investigate how the existing national legal, policy, and programmatic frameworks create an environment in which these harmful practices can thrive.

Global Fund Advocates Network Asia-Pacific (GFAN AP) along with 759 signatories from communities living with and affected by HIV, TB and malaria and civil society organisations in Asia-Pacific and globally extend sincere gratitude to the United States (U.S.), the Biden-Harris Administration, and the U.S. Congress led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for the $3.5 billion emergency funding commitment they secured for the efforts of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund) to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in low- and middle-income countries.

UNAIDS – TDOV 2021 Campaign – The Mirror

UNAIDS is releasing the Mirror on the International Transgender Day of Visibility. Gender diversity is not a lifestyle choice but an inherent right of all people. Gender stereotypes, especially towards LGBTI people, lead to stigma and discrimination. This is more pronounced in children and adolescents, as diversity among them is not commonly understood and society puts massive pressure on them to conform to their assigned gender norms.

COVID-19 Trans Resilience: Stories Of Hope, Pain And Survival From The Asia And Pacific Trans Movement - End of Campaign

Over the last 5 weeks, APTN has shared the stories, profiles, findings, and advice from the transgender movement in Asia and the Pacific during the #COVID19 #pandemic. We hope that over the last few weeks you have learned of the unique and urgent needs of the #transgender community and found local, grassroots organisations to follow and support. We are grateful to our 22 Community Support Fund #partners and #focalpoints, and our #funders and #donors, whose hard work and dedication has sustained the #transcommunity throughout the past year. This is a testament to the #transmovement’s resilience.

IDAHOT 2021 -  The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia by May17.org

Next month for IDAHOT 2021, May17.org will support and help to send out the message and raise awareness, together, in the global fight against discrimination. There's already compiled a first list of events, from Iran to Australia, which give an early indication of how diverse and wide ranging the Day will be again this year. If you would like to add your event, you can register your event or send the information at contact@may17.org.
