Weekly COVID Update- April 22, 2021

Richmond and Henrico Health Districts are working hard to ensure every person in our region receives the information, care, and resources they need to stay as safe and healthy as possible during the COVID-19 pandemic—especially access to COVID-19 testing and vaccination. Here is a breakdown of the latest news and resources in our fight against COVID-19.

COVID-19 Vaccine News
40% of all people in the Richmond region have now been vaccinated!

As of April 18, 40% of our region’s entire population (not just those who are currently eligible) has received at least one dose of the vaccine, and around 26.3% have been fully vaccinated. The majority of vaccine recipients in Richmond and Henrico have identified as female, and white residents have received the majority of vaccine doses to date. RHHD is working with partners across our region to make sure every resident who wants the vaccine is able to receive it.

COVID-19-related hospitalizations and deaths are continuing to decrease in Richmond and Henrico.

After a peak in January following the holiday season, hospitalizations for COVID-19 patients are steadily declining, returning roughly to the rates we experienced in November of 2020. COVID-19 deaths are also decreasing: the current 7-day average for COVID-19 deaths is 1 for Henrico and less than 1 for Richmond. As more people choose to receive the vaccine, and as the majority of residents continue to observe prevention measures like wearing a mask and getting tested if they are exposed or experience symptoms, we hope to see these numbers fall even further in the weeks and months ahead.

Still need to schedule your vaccination appointment? Here’s how to do it.
1. Pre-register for an appointment with RHHD.

Pre-register at vaccinate.virginia.gov or by calling 877-VAX-IN-VA (1-877-829-4682) to be notified when there is an appointment available to you. When you pre-register with Vaccinate Virginia, you will be asked a series of quick and easy demographic questions and will be placed on a list to be contacted when there is an appointment available for you at one of our vaccination events. (You probably know people who have been vaccinated at the Richmond International Raceway—this is how they got their appointment!)

2. Search for a provider on VaccineFinder.

VaccineFinder.org allows you to look up most of the places that offer vaccines in your area, including pharmacies and primary care providers. You can search by your zip code and choose the distance you’re willing to travel (options range from 1 mile to 50 miles). Then, VaccineFinder will show you a map of all the locations that have vaccine doses in stock. Clicking on a location takes you to that pharmacy or provider’s website where you may be asked some eligibility and demographic questions before you can schedule an appointment. Note that not all locations that are listed on VaccineFinder as having doses in stock will have available appointments, so you may need to do a bit of searching or circling back to find an appointment that works for you.

3. If you are 65 or older or eligible in Phases 1a, 1b, or 1c, you can schedule an appointment directly by phone.

Richmond and Henrico residents who are 65+ or eligible in any Phase 1 group can call  (804) 205-3501, Monday through Friday 8 am-5 pm, to schedule an appointment over the phone.

4. Registration help is available for residents who speak languages other than English.

If you or someone you know is unable to pre-register through Vaccinate Virginia or navigate VaccineFinder due to a language barrier, call 1-877-VAX-IN-VA (1-877-829-4682). Help is available in English and Spanish, with callback options in 100 other languages.

You may also be contacted directly by your healthcare provider, local pharmacy, a faith community, or community organization with a vaccination opportunity. We recommend seeking a vaccine using whichever method is best for you and taking the first opportunity you have to get vaccinated!

COVID-19 Testing
If you have been exposed to a confirmed case of COVID-19 or experience COVID-19 symptoms, call your doctor and get tested as soon as possible. Free community testing events are held regularly through Richmond and Henrico Health Districts, but many other providers also offer testing for people with and without insurance. Check out a detailed list of testing providers on the Richmond City Health District site.
