Tireless, and sometimes thankless work. Reporting on Westlake Landfill from Dawn Chapman and Karen Nickel

Dawn Chapman and Karen Nickel have been tirelessly advocating for years for the people living within miles of the West Lake Landfill, a collection site for radioactive waste during the 1940’s near Lambert Airport. And that hard work is finally being addressed at the federal level with definitive action, albeit in small steps. Recently, exhaustive soil-testing results in the area confirmed “the radiation is everywhere.” A removal plan is in the works through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and The Army Corps of Engineers is in the process of cleaning Clearwater Creek, long believed to be carrying toxic waste through nine miles of neighborhoods in North St. Louis County. It is a slow process, with two of the nine miles addressed so far. As they wait for and monitor progress on the powerful initiatives they spent years demanding, Dawn and Karen are now helping other communities in the country get their stories told and advocacy platforms developed with the inspiring, limitless energy of Just Moms StL.
For more information, here’s a YouTube link to the Atomic Homefront Documentary that explains the history of the waste dumping and its lingering effects:

Christine Nobbe Returns to talk about SPACE!
Out of this World News
Civitas was thrilled to welcome Christine Nobbe, aka “Space Girl,” back as a speaker this past Saturday for many reasons. One, her enthusiasm and knowledge are contagious and fun. Two, there is a lot happening in the world of space development these days, and it’s a nice distraction from other news. Three, she always concludes with great career advice. With a compelling visual presentation (click here to access Moon, Mars, & Beyond from the Civitas website), Christine updated everyone on Mars action, including the recent flight of Ingenuity, a helicopter exploring the planet; and MOXIE, a machine creating atmosphere for human breathing in space. She shared a bit about NASA’s Moon to Mars program, which includes the Artemis mission goals of putting the first woman and first person of color on the Moon. The morning included a robust dialogue about SpaceX and its success of reusable rockets, including the one that just sent Crew 2 to the International Space Station last Friday. An expensive rivalry between Elon Musk and Origin Blue founder, Jeff Bezos, is helping to create a robust collaboration with NASA and commercial entities with common space exploration goals. The morning flew by with questions answered and many ideas left to ponder. Check out Christine’s presentation for several intriguing video clips and a lengthy list of resources to learn more.
