Duke Neurology at AAN 2021: Highlights from a virtual year
The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) moved its annual meeting to a virtual setting this year, but its offerings of the latest education and scientific programming continue. This year, members of the Duke Neurology Department collaborated with their colleagues at Duke and with other academic institutions to advance our understanding of neuro-oncology, myasthenia gravis, ALS, and other fields and disciplines. Eye strokes: Earlier ED referral can reduce impact of sudden vision loss
A recent study led by Duke vascular neurologist Brian Mac Grory, MB, BCh, BAO, examined treatment for central retinal artery occlusion—a rare type of stroke characterized by the sudden onset of painless, usually permanent vision loss in one eye. Mac Grory notes that while most strokes present with weakness, facial droop or difficulty speaking, eye strokes are hard to recognize and treat in a timely manner. Read more.

 

This Week at Duke: Chief Resident Grand Rounds, Neuro D&I Meeting, stroke faculty talk, and more
Neurology Grand Rounds resume this week with Child Neurology's Erik Ross, MD, giving our first Chief Resident Grand Rounds of 2021.On Thursday, Abimbola Sunmonu, MD, PhD will give a stroke faculty candidate talk. All our welcome to attend our quarterly neurology diversity and inclusion meeting on Friday. Other events include lectures on palliative care, neurobiology, and geriatrics on Monday and Tuesday. Staff Spotlight
Abbie Suttle, MSc
Abbie Suttle, MSc, wants to improve our understanding of pain. She is currently working to better understand the trigeminal ganglion to potentially treat a painful jaw disorder known as TMD, and another to better understand and prevent the sensitization that occurs for medications for migraine and headache. Suttle talks to us about her involvement in both of these projects. She also discusses her time as a master’s student studying bone development in the University of Edinburgh, and her loves of horses, German Shepherds, language, and crocheting whale sharks when she’s not at work.
