The Hinge

<<First Name>>,

In the second message to the sermon series, “The Pathway to Pentecost,” titled “Entrance Approved,” we learned about the incredible love that God has for mankind—you and me! The Apostle Paul’s prayer to the church of Ephesus describes this inconceivable love through knowing “the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:19).

Here is a probing question that we considered in the message, “Have you ever had a good relationship go bad?” In addition to this question, “Have you ever invested passion and intensity and enthusiasm and creativity in someone who failed to reciprocate it? Have you ever loved someone with all your soul who turned you away for another lover?"

Then you know the grief that emerges from the lover’s heart when love is not reciprocated. You know the mourning it produces is often even greater mourning that can be experienced upon the death of someone who loved us while they lived. The death of a romantic heart is so painful, bleeding, and degrading that it often requires therapy to overcome the sense of rejection. That represents something of the heart of God as expressed in Genesis chapter 3 with the fall of man. It is easy to see the divorce papers being finalized as God annuls the relationship He had with Adam and Eve. What was lost?
  • Gone are the fellowship and the intermingling of the divine and the man.
  • Gone is the Garden of Eden that God so meticulously orchestrated for man to live in forever.
  • Gone are the delight and intimacy of love.
  • Gone was the opportunity to hear the voice of the Lord walking through the cool of the Garden.
  • Gone are the praises and worship, and passion that should have existed in the eye of His adoration.
  • Gone was the daily communion between them and God.
When God had called out to Adam, “Where are You?” He found His beloved in the arms of the serpent, Satan. The betrayal was too much for the relationship to sustain. In their rejection, God looked at fallen Adam and Eve and said, “Get out! Take your stuff and GO!" The divine Lawyer signed the paper, the love affair broke down, and they were no longer on speaking terms. Adam and Eve, ashamed to look back, walked away from eternal life to eternal loss, trying to fill the void that love left with things that do not satisfy.

So, what was the answer to the circumstance of a broken relationship between God and mankind? It was the Cross that the Lord Jesus took upon Himself! The Cross is the hinge of Salvation and fellowship with God. The Cross makes the door open so we can have entrance to God. If there is no Cross, there is no hinge. If there is no hinge, there is no door. Without a door, there is not an entrance. The Cross is the place where mercy and truth meet together. The Cross is the place where sinners come to the Savior. The cross is the place where the lost find their way. The Cross is the place where the spiritually blind receive their sight. We don’t need to go to the priest to find forgiveness for our sins, because God Has opened up the door of forgiveness. Jesus is the door to salvation, and He invites you to come and dine with Him for all eternity!

In closing, the message for this Sunday is titled, “The Cross—Jesus Paid it All” from Ephesians 2:8-9.“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

#Strafford150 Presentation This Saturday

Strafford is celebrating 150 years in 2021 (First Baptist Church is celebrating 145!). The community is invited to join together as we celebrate Strafford's 150th birthday in the first of many events that will be happening over the course of the year!

For starters, there will be several Saturday morning presentations sponsored by the Strafford Historical and Preservation Society and the City of Strafford. The first event will take place this Saturday, April 24 at Strafford City Hall. A coffee mingle will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by a presentation from resident historian Steve Bodenhamer at 10:00 a.m. Future discussions in the series will focus on specific eras relevant to our community's past.

SBC Missionary Highlight & Prayer Prompt

“Christianity is prevalent in Kenya; however, the majority of Christians have a misconstrued view of Jesus and the Bible,” say IMB missionaries Daniel and Kristen Lowry.

Daniel is dedicated to teaching truth and training faithful preachers of the Gospel. A professor at the Kenya Baptist Theological College and Seminary, Daniel has opportunities to teach truth and correct misunderstandings of the Gospel among Kenyan ministry students.

He and the other professors desire to see Kenyans leading churches who are faithful to God’s Word. Additionally, Daniel wants to see students trained in practical application by partnering students with faithful pastors so the students can see first-hand how to live out what they are learning in the classroom.

THE COOPERATIVE PROGRAM is the financial fuel for reaching every person for Jesus Christ in every town, every city, every state, and every nation. Your support through the Cooperative Program assists missionaries like the Lowrys in their work to train local believers to disciple others.

PRAY for the Lowrys as they serve in Kenya, especially for Daniel and the other seminary faculty who are equipping Kenyan leaders who then equip other believers. Because of their dedication, God is on the move in Kenya.

In every edition of the FirstUpdate, we are highlighting the efforts of the International Mission Board (IMB), the North American Mission Board (NAMB), the six Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) seminaries, and the various Baptist state conventions. Each month, our church and the other 47,000+ churches in the SBC contribute a portion of our undesignated offerings to these important Cooperative Program (CP) ministries. For more information about CP, click HERE.

Giving Options

Even if you aren't joining us for in-person worship on Sunday, please continue to remember your tithes and offerings. The church’s ministries and operational expenses go on in spite of the current situation. We want to be a blessing to our community and it takes resources to do that. Your faithful giving makes it possible!

In addition to dropping cash or checks in the offering box on Sunday morning, there are multiple ways to give your tithes and offerings:
  • Online through Tithe.ly or the Tithe.ly app
  • Mail a check to First Baptist Church, PO Box 367, Strafford, MO 65757
  • Several of our members have begun using online bill pay through their bank to send in their offering. This is a free service that some banks provide. All you have to do is add the church’s name and address as a vendor, just like you would the electric company or any other business.
  • You can also drop your offering by the church office, but please call ahead to make sure that someone will be in the office.
Thank you again, church family, for your generous and faithful giving! If you need help setting up online giving or have any questions, contact Josh Erisman.
