Happy Earth Day!

The earth is our home, and we must take care of her.  We all want clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and to leave our children a habitable planet. What did you do today to celebrate Earth Day?

Today I spent time on an Earth Day tour, learning about the important work of MedShare, who has diverted 26 million pounds of medical supplies and equipment from US landfills.  What a wonderful way to celebrate our Earth!  Thank you to Robin Chalmers for inviting me - she is a Super Volunteer - and to CEO and President Charles Redding for his welcome and making the important connection of deforestation’s impact  in many countries, like Haiti, Nigeria, and Ghana, causing human suffering with famine, droughts, and human migration.   I was excited that my colleague Rep Regina Lewis-Ward also attended the tour.

Protecting our environment and building a clean energy economy is a priority for me.  This year I:

  • Actively Campaigned for November Referendum, Constitutional Amendment 1: Dedicating Tax and Fee Revenue Amendment (HR 164), “restoring trust in the trust fund”, which passed overwhelmingly.
  • Voted unanimously with my House and Senate colleagues, on March 3 for HB 511, the enabling legislation for HR 164, which directs certain fees (hazardous waste, solid waste, etc) toward their intended purpose.  As Jesse Demonbreun-Chapman, executive director of the Coosa River Basin Initiative says: "[The amendment's] passage represents an important step toward cleaning up Georgia. These funds ... were created to pay for the cleanup of illegal tire dumps and abandoned hazardous waste sites. Now we will finally have the ability to protect these funds and start cleaning up blight properties across the state."
  • Initiated and partnered with Jennette Gayer of Environment Georgia  to convene an  Environmental & Clean Energy Open House on  Wednesday, Jan 13th , 2021, for ten environmental advocacy groups to present their priorities to 20 legislators.
  • In the 2022 budget, voted for the Department of Natural Resources to receive $14.8 million in bonds for construction, renovation, and significant improvements needed to maintain existing facilities.
  • Sponsored  HR 211 urging Governor Kemp to join the US Climate Alliance
  • Sponsored, with bi-partisan support, and received a hearing in State Properties committee, on HR 223,  creating a Study Committee on Sustainable Materials Management on State Properties
  • Co-Sponsored HB 460, which would allow for direct sales in Georgia of Electric Vehicles other than Tesla

Last week, after we received our 2nd vaccinations, David and I escaped to Montreat, and enjoyed several "walks in the woods" and trails.  Here we are on Walker's Knob, with a beautiful view of God's beautiful gift to us, our Mother Earth, and Swannanoa Valley.
It is my honor and privilege to serve as our State Representative.  If you would like to invest in and support our work, you may contribute here.  Thank you for your consideration!

Happy Earth Day to you!  I will celebrate now by going out for a walk on this beautiful Spring Day!
