Hi there!

We hope everyone is doing well. Thanks to all for your continued support of Cartoon Movement and for taking the time to read our newsletter. Catch up on our latest news, and sign up for one or more of the events we'll be hosting in May.

Upcoming events

We have a bunch of online events coming up in May:

May 3 - 7.30pm CEST - Evergreen Satire

Together with the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision we are working on a project to give new relevance to historical editorial cartoons. We'll have more details about this project soon, as we are working on a big event in September. On May 3, we will kick off the project on Instagram at 5.30pm CEST with a guest expert, talking about the similarities and differences of cartoons that were made a century ago and cartoons that are drawn today.

Join us on Instagram on May 3, and let us know you're coming here.

May 7 - 6.30pm CEST - Cartoonist 2 Cartoonist, episode 2

In Cartoonist 2 Cartoonist, CM editors Tjeerd Royaards and Emanuele Del Rosso go live on Instagram to give constructive critique on a selection of cartoons that were submitted by cartoonists from all levels that would  like feedback on their work. You can see the first episode here. And if you would like to submit your cartoon(s) to take part in C2C, send them to cartoons@cartoonmovement.com

Join us on Instagram on May 3, and let us know you're coming here.

May 19 - 4.00pm CEST - LOL: The Limits of Laughter

This is the second online event of Cartoons in Court, a three-year research project coordinated by the Institute for Advanced Study at Central European University about legal controversies around cartoons and humor. During the event, the researchers will present their progress. We are also delighted to have a special guest: Bob Mankoff, cartoon editor for the New Yorker for 20 years, will join us and offer his insights on the limits of satire and (self-)censorship.

Join us on May 19 between 4pm CEST and 5.30pm CEST. More details will follow soon.

Comics journalism: Peace and politics in South Sudan

This month, we published the last comic in our series about public authority in Africa, produced for the London School of Economics. The final comic, based on research by Dr. Naomi Pendle and drawn by South Sudanese artist Tom Dai, focuses on the peace process in South Sudan. You can read it here.
