How to Get Published is back!

Hello friends,

After a brief pause I'm back with a weekly(ish) newsletter. Publishing Talk Membership is now open, there are new masterclasses to tell you about - and there's also an online version of our How to Get Published writers' conference on the horizon!

Do you remember, in the beforetimes, we ran a one-day conference at Foyles bookshop in London? It was a great day, packed with inspiring speakers and practical advice on getting published: traditionally, indie and other routes. You can get a flavour of the event and see feedback from delegates in this video.

How to Get Published - 2019

We're running over two days this time, and online - so you can join us from anywhere in the world. We'll have three 90-minute Zoom sessions each day, starting at 2:30pm UK time. Day One will focus on traditional publishing, and Day Two on self-publishing and other routes. You can join us for one or both days - and video replays will be available. And there's 25% off for members.

Booking is now open, with limited Super Earlybird tickets available. For more details, see the How to Get Published event listing.

Book of the Week: How to Write Everything by David Quantick

How to Write Everything by David QuantickI've just finished reading (listening to) David Quantick's useful guide to writing - as the title suggests - everything.

David, like many of us, is a 'multiplatform writer'. He's written just about everything - from sketches and sitcoms for TV and radio, to novels and non-fiction books, to newspaper columns, to awards ceremony scripts (there is such a thing) and wedding speeches.

He's not written so much in the way of film, plays and poetry - so he interviews people who have for those chapters. His advice on writing in general, and writing for these specific formats, is straightforward, practical and direct.

One stand-out quote for me, on the difference between traditional and self-publishing:

"An old-style pubishing house brings with it PR (to varying degrees) and access to familiar outlets, like bookshops. A publisher will also pay you a different - and generally smaller - royalty; but might also give you an advance, so you can stay alive while you write your next book. They will also be more likely to reject your work - whereas the internet is defenceless against your talent."

You can find it on Amazon.

Social Media Training - Online

Social Media Training for Publishers
I've taught social media marketing to publishers (and others) for about 15 years - since the dawn of social media! I still am - but online. Digital skills have become even more important during the pandemic, and I've had a few enquiries lately. So here's a bit of detail about how it all works.

I either create bespoke online courses, or run live Zoom training sessions - or a mix of both. I'm running some publisher training in May - and I'm also looking forward to teaching social media marketing at Birkbeck again next week. I've taught at Birkbeck for over 10 years - though never online!

Let me know if your team could benefit from some social media training this year.

From the Blog: 10 ways to market your book if you really don't like marketing

But what if you don't like marketing? As an author today, you can't just leave it all to your publisher - you're expected to get involved. And if you're self-published, you have to market your own book - no one else is going to do it for you.

But you became a writer to write - not to market. What if you feel that writing is what you're good at - and marketing isn't? I've put together this list of 10 ways to approach your book marketing as an author - if you really, really don't like marketing!

I'll be back soon with more events, resources, books and tips for you. Meanwhile, let me know if there's anything I can help you with.
