Gov. Cooper hopes to lift all restrictions by end of May; mask mandate to stay in place


Governor Roy Cooper and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Mandy K. Cohen, M.D. laid out a timeline for lifting current pandemic restrictions today. With stable trends and continued vaccination success, the state expects to lift mandatory social distancing, capacity, and mass gathering restrictions by June 1. The Governor plans to issue an executive order next week outlining safety restrictions for the month of May.

JACKSON COUNTY

A punt, pass and kick clinic will be held at noon Saturday, April 24, at the Cashiers/Glenville Recreation Center in Jackson County. The event is free to everyone, with groups for ages 6-8, 9-11 and 12-14. Offered by Jackson County Parks and Recreation. www.rec.jacksonnc.org.
 

The annual fundraising event to support our New Century Scholars (NCS) program is now underway. This year, we've pivoted to a virtual campaign called "Dollars for New Century Scholars." 
There will be a drawing for cash prizes of $500, $250 and $100 on May 7. The winner will be announced on 
southwesterncc.edu and notified by email. Tickets can be purchased until 11:59 p.m. on May 6.
All proceeds directly support the NCS program. This program is not state-funded; every student  who's graduated from the program did so with the support of generous individuals and organizations in our communities, and we thank you for your support in sustaining NCS for the past quarter century. PB Runners Trash Sweep East LaPorte Park Tomorrow at 9 AM–12 PM  Last trash pick up on Caney Fork. We will begin at 9:00 AM and meet at East LaPort in Cullowhee. This pick up will be to collect any new trash that has accumulated in the Caney Fork area. All equipment will be supplied (trash bags, gloves, vests, and grabbers)

“Dillsboro After Five” will take place from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, in downtown Dillsboro

Register for the Fun 4 Kids Day Camp offered by Jackson County Parks and Recreation beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 17. The Cullowhee camp is open to children who have completed kindergarten through sixth grade. Cost is $625, or $600 for the second child enrolled, and dates are June 14 through Aug. 6. The Cashiers camp is open to ages 5 through 12, though campers must have completed kindergarten. Cost is $700 and dates are June 1 through July 30. Watershed Association of the Tuckaseegee River, or WATR, will host the Tuckaseegee Watershed Eco-Fest 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 24, at Monteith Farm Park Pavilion in Dillsboro. The event will include an opportunity to get close-up, hands-on experience with stream insects, and to learn more about WATR’s work. www.watrnc.org

Registration is open through April 30 for a volleyball league starting in Cullowhee this May. Teams are available for girls and boys in the 8-10 and 11-14 age groups. An Upper Cascades release will provide fun for boaters, and kayak demos from a variety of vendors will be available 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday. From 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, live music from the Log Noggins Band will be provided. e river. Applications are currently being Taken for the Macon County School’s PreK Program for the 2021-2022 school year.   Applications may be picked up at the Macon County School’s Central Office or at one of the 3 PreK school site locations.  A child is eligible for NC PreK funding if they turn four on or before August 31 of the program year (2021), but is not yet five years of age and the family meets income guidelines. Hiking in the Area:

The Nantahala Hiking Club will take an easy 4 to 6 miles hike on Friday, April 23. Dogs are welcome.  The club will meet at Westgate Plaza in Franklin at 10 a.m. Call leader Katharine Brown, 421-4178, for reservations

 The inaugural Running of the Goats 5K and Nature Walk will take place at the WNC Nature Center in Asheville on Sunday, April 25. Registration is limited and rolling starts with waves between 7:30 and 9 a.m. will allow for distancing. Holly Springs Baptist Church, 2nd Mile Ministry is open 10 to Noon Mondays providing a food pantry, children's clothes and financial aid (rent and utilities) for families and seniors in need. 

Friends of the Greenway  FROG Quarters is now open Wednesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to  2 p.m.,  at 573 E. Main in Franklin. Stop by for coffee or a soft drink and a snack, use our free internet.  You can also reserve the shelters for your events there.

Smoky Mountain Pregnancy Care Centers in Cullowhee and Franklin have an educational parenting program to earn “points” to use to obtain free items for your family. The centers carry formula, diapers, wipes, baby items and clothing up to size 6, as well as strollers, car seats, high chairs, pack n’ plays, etc. Donations are always welcome. CareNet on Bidwell Street will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  A box of food may be picked up once a week.

Five Fire Departments in Macon County – Nantahala, Cullasaja, Sky Valley, Clarks Chapel, and Burningtown – are open Monday thru Fridays for drive up food deliveries from 1 to 4 p.m. for anyone who needs food.
