    Support For Anti-Racism Report

The Bishop of Carlisle has thrown his support behind the publication of a new report published yesterday (Thursday 22 April) by the Archbishops' Anti-Racism Taskforce.

In a statement, Bishop James comments: "I warmly endorse the findings published in the report – From Lament To Action - by the Archbishops’ Anti-Racism Taskforce.

“The report makes clear that at the heart of our Christian faith is the knowledge we are all made in the image of God and that in Jesus Christ we are one. That means our differences aren’t simply erased but embraced as we see God’s image reflected in each other.

“Of the proposals tabled in the report, I would particularly welcome the opportunity to work alongside a minority-ethnic colleague from outside our diocese who would act as a ‘reverse mentor’." Read Bishop James's full statement here.

Ordination Joy

Congratulations to the Rev Dr Susi Wood who was ordained Priest last night (Thursday 22 April) at a service in St John's Keswick.

It followed a previous service on Wednesday evening at which Susi was ordained Deacon. She will serve as House for Duty Assistant Curate (in training) in St John's in the Vale, St Mary's Threlkeld and Wythburn.

She was licensed by Bishop James and to celebrate her ordination, Susi ordered a special stole which features Blencathra, Herdwick sheep and a Celtic cross. Please do pray for her in her continued ministry.

Honorary Chaplains

Three members of clergy are set to be appointed Honorary Canons of Carlisle Cathedral.

They are:

  • the Rev Katharine Butterfield, Rector of the Benefice of Kirkoswald, Renwick with Croglin, Great Salkeld and Lazonby and Joint Mission Community Leader (East of Eden)
  • the Rev Richard Snow, Team Rector of Kirkby Lonsdale Team Ministry

The collation /installation service takes place at the Cathedral at 3pm on Sunday 20 June.

           National Clergy Register

All clergy and chaplains have been written to by Bishop James about the launch of a new National Register and People System.

Clergy were alerted to the new National Register earlier this year. It will further strengthen safeguarding and will be available in May.

Meanwhile a new People System (which drives the National register) will also go live at the start of May, with clergy due to receive a national email explaining log-in details and further instructions.

Bishop James specifically asks that clergy:

  • check that their details on the People and Data system are correct. This needs to be done before it goes live at the start of May (please follow the national instructions to do this).
  • ensure that by 31 July they have downloaded any documents they may need from the current MyView database, i.e. payslips, P60s, etc. After this date there will be no access to this system so no documents will be able to be viewed nor subsequently obtained.

Second C of E Vision Webinar

You are invited to join a second webinar which will consider the Church of England's emerging vision and strategy for the next decade.

The event takes place on Monday 26 April from 12.30pm to 1.30pm and will be led by the Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell and panel members.

It will explore what it means to be a church that is centred on and shaped by Jesus Christ – a church that is simpler, humbler, bolder.

The session will focus on the strategic priority to be a church where the mixed ecology of many forms of church is the norm. Questions raised in the first webinar in this series will inform the content of this session. As well as hearing from the panel, there will be time for your questions and to find out what the vision, and in particular this strategic priority, means for you, your church, or diocese.

  • This dual role looks for a person of initiative, who has a track record in gathering and equipping volunteers to work together to lead and facilitate activities and outreach events.

The St Kentigern School

A few places are still available for the third running of The St Kentigern School, which offers a deep exploration of the contemplative tradition. It is a collaborative venture between the Diocese of Carlisle and the Sacred Space Foundation.

Course leader, the Rev Prof Stephen Wright, of the Sacred Space Foundation says: "Don’t bother applying for this course if you are content in your faith and feel no need for anything new. If, however, you feel or know of others who feel alienated by religion, of whatever sort, yet are longing for the ‘something other’, if you are put off by doctrines, dogmas or rituals, are on the margins of faith (or feeling somewhat lost or dissatisfied in the present one), or long for enquiry, truth and a deeper connection to the ‘real’, then this course may be for you."

A prospectus is available here and participation requires a full commitment to stay the course, which includes two residential weekends (held at the Blencathra Centre, near Keswick, June 25-27 and November 5-7 2021) and ten ‘workbooks’ via email in between.
