Loreto Highlights Update - 23rd April 2021

World Earth Day
The environment and sustainability have been taken very seriously by the pupils at Loreto Convent for some time now, with our Loreto Sustainable School Committee (LSSC) promoting causes such as Traffic Free Tuesday and our very own recycled Christmas wrapping paper. The gardening club has also taken a keen interest and has grown fruit and vegetables throughout the year as well as many plants and flowers.
This week the pupils have been very excited, the school was buzzing with talk of the environment and the LSSC was very busy preparing for a day very close to their hearts.
Every April 22nd sees the celebration of World Earth Day, a global event that has taken place since 1970 and this year, Loreto Convent has ensured that they are a part of such an important event, that they are part of finding ways to promote the cause, that they are part of the change.
From our young nursery children who have been planting seeds, to our top of the school year 6’s who have written letters to the Minister for Environment, the whole school carefully planned and prepared to do their bit. The day has also seen the year 2’s work on microhabitats, the year 3’s taking charge of monitoring the school and our habits to try and reduce energy consumption, the year 4’s looking into organisms living in the waters around Gibraltar and the year 5’s becoming chefs for the day and preparing a delicious vegan meal as well as nurturing their flowering plant seeds to maturity during the following weeks.
The school has had a great time taking part in all the extra activities, which they plan to continue throughout the year, and activities which can make a real difference. World Earth Day is a fantastic opportunity to educate and make a change; to make sure that our children know that they are the future we depend upon; and to inspire the next generation to ensure that it is Earth day EVERY day!

There is hope!
Thank you to Morrisons who are giving away sunflower seeds as part of the supermarket chain’s Seeds of Hope campaign, which is designed to help brighten up customers’ window boxes and gardens.  Staff have donated these to the school pupils where classes have sown seeds to grow their own sunflowers.  The school gardening club has also organised a class sunflower growing competition, and of course the staff have an entry!!
First Holy Communion
Father Paul spoke to the children preparing for their First Holy Communion in the chapel. He told them about the mass with special emphasis on the Eucharist. It was lovely to welcome Louis back too for the morning.
Nursery 1
Our youngest pupils are active as sand play helps to develop their fine motor skills, and hand eye coordination.
North or South?
Welcome to the North and South Pole.  Year 1 have been learning about cold places and have created these ‘cold’ animal collages.
Online Support - FORTNITE
With children using devices more regularly at home, especially during lockdown it is important to understand how you can help support children to use these devices responsibly.
This week we are focusing on FORTNITE which is popular online platform amongst children.  Is your child playing FORTNITE?  If so, then please take a few moments to learn what the different FORTNITE games are, the dangers and how to activate the correct parental controls.
Beast Hunting!
Year 2 have been searching for micro habitats in our school garden. They were able to lift stones to see what beasts were lurking underneath.
Faith Diary
‘ This coming Sunday is also known as Good Shepherd Sunday, in the Gospel we hear that, unlike the Pharisees who have no relationship and therefore little true concern for the people in their spiritual care, Jesus knows us, the members of His flock, individually and loves us so much that like a good shepherd He was willing to lay down his life on the cross for each one of us. We are prompted to ask ourselves what relationship we, personally, have with Jesus and how much we are willing to offer Him in return. ’
Flip Books!
Our year 4 pupils have embraced the latest addition to the school's technology development.  The school has a class set of touch screen flip books which pupils have started to use around the school to enhance their curriculum studies.

Rugby Stars!
Two of our Year 5 pupils, Amber and Hugo, took part in a Rugby tournament last weekend and both were very keen to share their individual awards with their class. Amber’s certificate was awarded for the “Coach's player of the Championship” and Hugo’s certificate was a “Core Values” award. All of us at Loreto are very proud of you! Keep up the great work!
Jack & the Beanstalk
Foundations Stage 2 have been learning about plants. The pupils have made their own greenhouses and are looking forward to watching their beans grow!
Lower Primary - Gold Book
We have pupils in Lower Primary who have been commended for their efforts and achievement this week, making it into the gold book, well done.
