Students Will Not Take State Tests This Spring
Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal made the following statement:
"I have made the determination that Washington state will not be administering the Smarter Balanced Assessments or the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science this spring. Instead, our assessment window for the 2020–21 school year will be in the fall — a timeline consistent with guidance provided by the Department to satisfy federal testing requirements." Read more about the plans for student assessments here.

Seattle Schools

Daily Attestation Procedure Tip
Adults can give their student permission to complete their own attestation. Next time you fill out the questions from your email, look for the guardian student approval question located just under the question: “Do you plan to come to School/Site today? The responder can then click: “I want to update the delivery preferences or grant my student permission to complete the screening” Then, they can grant permission by answering the following question: "I believe my student understands the questions being asked in the Daily Health Screening and grant permission for Seattle Public Schools to accept their response. ” If the answer yes, then a text boxes opens to add the student text number. Adding a student email to the Screening is not an option. Parents/guardians who give permission for their student to complete the Screening, can “opt out” of emails/texts in the “update the delivery preferences” section.

Live-streamed on May 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15 at 7:30 pm
“Spring Awakening” follows three teenagers in a small village who experience the dawn of their own sexuality. They inevitably awaken to both joy and pain, with little direction from the adults around them. The original play from 1891 was so scandalous for addressing sex violence and suicide that it was not staged until 1906. This contemporary production was first staged on Broadway in 2006. Tickets are $25 at www.showtix4u.com. Make it dinner and a show: Alison’s Coastal Kitchen Takeout has put together a spring-themed, takeout dinner box ($55 for two) to enjoy with the show. Preorder now (with 24-hour notice).

Tickets are generally pay-what-you-can.

Fighting Words Poetry Contest
How can poetry be an effective response to current events and under-reported stories? How can we use poetry to connect global issues to our local and personal contexts? Students are invited to explore these questions and make their voices heard in their entries to the Fighting Words Poetry Contest hosted by the Pulitzer Center for Education. Any current K-12 student in the United States or internationally may enter. Students may write in any language, and are welcome to submit multilingual poems. Cash prizes will be awarded. Deadline May 15.
