Our Focus on Our Mission Kept Us Strong

Around the world, one year after the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re all taking stock of what we’ve endured and how we’re doing. For not-for-profit organizations such as Free Geek, the primary focus has been supporting the organizations and communities who benefit from our services, while keeping our staff and volunteers safe.

At a time when more people than ever needed access to affordable technology to stay connected to school, work, family and friends, the pandemic forced us to restrict physical access to our location and services. Over the course of the various government-mandated shut-downs, we’ve asked volunteers and staff to stay home and requested that community members stop dropping off their unwanted and end-of-life technology donations.

Despite this “pause,” we continued our important work. By August, we had provided 45 laptops to people in need of virtual connection in a time of physical distancing, thanks to funding from the United Way of Greater Toronto’s Local Love Emergency Fund and partnerships with LOFT Community Services, Family Services Toronto, the YMCA of Greater Toronto, and others.

We know we’ll face more challenges as the pandemic enters its second year but with the continuing support of our members, volunteers, and staff, we’re confident we’ll continue to grow and deliver on our mission.

We’re so thankful to those supporters who’ve chosen to give us monthly donations throughout this challenging time. Your generosity over the past year means a lot! If you’re thinking of ways to support Free Geek, why not sign up for a monthly donation? Every little bit helps and no amount is too small! Thank you.
We always appreciate a donation of your unwanted technology but pieces of art like this make our day. Thank you to whoever sent this to us. It brightened our day.
Temporary Suspension of Operations

With the announcement of a new stay-at-home order on Thursday, April 8th, 2021 and to reduce risks to the health and safety of our staff, volunteers, members, and the community at large, effective Monday, April 12th, 2021, Free Geek Toronto will be suspending all operations including our online store and e-waste drop-off services

We will be re-evaluating the situation as new information becomes available to us and will notify our community of when we can expect to re-open our store for business and corresponding services. Please check our social media channels (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter) and our website for the latest updates.

Please note that with our operations now fully on hold we request that you keep your pending e-waste donations at your office or residence during this time. We will be pleased to receive them once our operations resume.

We thank you for your understanding and support as we navigate this situation. We are a small not-for-profit and, like many other social purpose organizations, closing our doors will have a significant impact on us. However, we will continue to prioritize the health and wellbeing of our staff and volunteers.

Free Geek Toronto is looking for four enthusiastic and engaged volunteers to serve on our Board of Directors. We encourage people of all backgrounds, genders, ages, education and income levels, beliefs, cultural, ethnic or sexual identities, and those living with visible or invisible disabilities who are passionate about our cause to volunteer with us.
