Annual General Meeting 2021 Via Zoom

MGB Register AGM – Saturday 22nd May at 11.00 (London) via Zoom.

We hope you will be attending this year’s AGM to check up on what your Committee have been doing over the last year!

You have none of the usual excuses - bad weather, distance to travel etc as you can attend via Zoom from the comfort of your armchair.  Of course, the big advantage of Zoom is that members can attend who normally could not due to travel restrictions.  Last year we had member’s join us from around the world.

Why not consider joining us on the committee and get more involved with the organisation and running of events.  Most find committee work enjoyable giving them more from their club membership.  We are a bunch of enthusiasts who enjoy their cars and meeting like-minded people.

So, if you are interested in joining the committee email - secretary@mgb-register.org  for an application form.
If you feel you cannot commit to the committee but would like to get more involved, we are always looking for members to help out on events.  If you are interested email me at - secretary@mgb-register.org

Remember to attend the AGM you must register please email - agm2021@mgb-register.org or follow the more info link below. Registrations CLOSE 20-05-21
Remember it’s your Committee so we look forward seeing you on the 22nd May.

Neil Hyett.
Secretary MGB Register.

Does your car have a Gold Seal engine?

The MGB register was recently contacted by a member who is trying to import a 1969 UK registered MGB into Portugal.  Unfortunately, he has run into trouble as the IMT (Portugal’s DVLA equivalent) does not recognize the engine No. because it does not include 18 in the serial No. either on the engine plate or in the V5 supplied with the car.

I must confess when I first looked at the number (48G733ER53788) I too was of the same opinion that this could not be an MGB engine. However, with a little detective work, a phone call to British Motor Industry Heritage trust at Gaydon and a subsequent photo showing a gold-coloured engine sent me in the direction of thinking that this must be an official BMC Gold Seal engine.

Gold Seal Engines were factory replacement engines sold on an exchange basis through BMC/BL main dealerships in the 60’s and 70’s, and 80’s. They were reconditioned with a high percentage of new parts and came with a 12-month unlimited mileage warranty. Interestingly there was also a Silver Seal reconditioned engine (Cheaper) using a lower percentage of new parts. The MGB engine however, was only available as a Gold Seal unit.

So, breaking down the engine serial No the 48G means this is a B series engine. (A series were 8G and C series 68G) The 733 show this to be a replacement for an 18V581,2 or3 type engine. I was unable to establish the meaning of the letter’s ER but after some discussion with better brains than me, it has been suggested the E stand for Exchange and the R denotes the crank /bores have been reground. (Maybe someone out there knows the correct answer).

Lost & Found News from the Registrar

Can you help?

MGB Roadster: VFT 2N
Hi, I am hoping you can reacquaint my father of 86 years with his beloved MG. A couple of things that made it a little different; it had a Bermuda colour coded hard top with the roof glass and a walnut dash and door caps. Any information would be helpful. Many thanks, Robin

MGB GT: DKL 161K
Hello Andrew - I am looking for this MGB GT, DKL 161K that used to be in my family.

Are you able to help? Many thanks, Brian

MGB GT: SOR 570G
Dear Andrew I am trying to trace my MGBGT that I sold in the Southampton area in 1984/1985.
Any previous photos I’d had were deteriorated with age but I managed to find a decent one yesterday so put it out on the Facebook group page for help to trace it.
I knew from checking online that it is now resprayed primrose yellow but someone pointed out yesterday it now has a 1950cc engine. As you can see, it used to be Grampian Grey, such a lovely colour and not many around. A fabulous car and so lovely to drive, I would just love to know what’s happened to it since I last owned it.

If anyone can help I would be very grateful. Many thanks, Liz

MGB GT: HPE 725K
I am trying to track down my old MGBGT and have been advised if your lost and found site. I do not have a picture but it was a white MGBGT. If anyone knows of it I would be keen to contact the owner. Kind regards, Brian

MGB GT: LPC 724K
Hi
I was pointed in your direction by some fellow MG enthusiasts. I am hoping you might be able to help. I am trying to find LPC 724K - a 1972 white MGB GT which I owned 1984-86. I believe it is still on the road. When I bought it someone had previously added the V8 badges to it, but it was a 1798cc with overdrive. It was my pride and joy at the time as it was also my first car. If the opportunity arose I would love to buy it back! Here’s hoping….
Kind regards, Nigel Smith

MGB GT: PXC 574J

I am trying to find any past information regarding my 1970 MGBGT registration number PXC 574J. Keen to hear from previous owners, pictures and details of past restoration and work done.

MGB GT: OCF 199M

I wonder if you have this car on your membership list, have you got a way of checking? It is a white MGB GT. I have looked on DVLA and it says it is taxed & in MOT, I owned this car from new and I would like to see it again, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards, Richard

MGB GT: MTF 99K
Dear Andrew,

My purpose of writing relates to a MGB GT that I previously owned and it may be of interest for your records to record the fate of this car.

This was an orange (blaze) MGB GT.  The Chassis / Frame No. GHD5279960G. Engine No. 18V582FH5694. It was first registered 06.04.1972. The registration no. in the UK was MTF 99K. I think I was the second owner.

I purchased the car in the Manchester area in August 1977 and then shortly afterwards (February 1978) I exported it to the island of St. Lucia in the West Indies where I was working at the time. The car travelled by sea on one of the banana boats operated by the Geest company which transported bananas from the Windward Islands to the UK and then returned to the islands carrying assorted freight. This entailed me driving the car to the docks at Barry in South Wales from where the Geest boat sailed to Castries in St. Lucia.
Obviously, the magnificent sunny climate of the Caribbean was ideally suited to always having the sun roof open. On the negative side the road surfaces in those days were not the best for high speeds in a car with relatively low ground clearance. I enjoyed the car for about five years and then, after several requests, sold it to an American based in St. Lucia before I left the island in 1984. I know that he subsequently sold the car to a business man in St. Lucia and it was used by his girlfriend. A later telephone call to a friend on the island failed to provide any further information as to the subsequent fate of the car but it is probably no longer in circulation.

I attach a photo of the car shortly before it left the UK. I hope this information is of use for your records or it may be of interest for the MGB Newsletter in Safety Fast.
Kind regards, Keith

MGB GT: NDO 201M
David is trying to find some history for his car. Does anyone remember it?

I am writing about my 1973 MGB GT that I have very recently purchased. I would like to find out any information regarding the cars history and how I may authenticate the cars true mileage if at all possible? Unfortunately, there wasn’t much service history that came with the car, only some MOT certificates going back to 2007. I have already searched the gov.uk MOT history checker which also only goes back to 2007. When getting insurance quotes online the car details came up as a ‘Limited Edition’ model however, the only difference I can physically see with the car is that the interior trim is a type of mustard yellow colour and the seats are leather. For your reference below are the car’s details and I have also attached some photos.
Engine No. 18V582F-H18495; Chassis No. GHD5 322516G; Current mileage: 16,2779 (this is correct following the MOTs back to 2007)
Any help you can offer will be very much appreciated.
Kind regards, David
