Garden Suites – Community Consultations

As the next step in the consultation process, City Planning will be hosting three virtual community consultation meetings where residents can learn more, ask questions, and share comments about Garden Suites. Three sessions have been arranged to provide additional date/time options but the same content will be reviewed at each meeting.

Sexual Assault Investigation
Toronto Police Services has advised the public of an arrest in an ongoing sexual assault investigation. Between July 1970 to August 2016 a man was employed as a licensed medical doctor, at a medical clinic located in the Bathurst Street and Lawrence Avenue West area. It is alleged: on Feb 2, 2006, the man sexually assaulted a 17 year old boy who was a patient. On Wed, Apr 21, 2021, Jacques Henri Dubins, 77, of Toronto was arrested. He is charged with Sexual Assult and Sexual Exploitation. He is scheduled to appear in court at 1000 Finch Ave W on Tues, May 25 at 2:30 pm. Police are concerned that there may be more victims. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-3200.

3180 Yonge Street – Community Consultation
A virtual Community Consultation meeting is being organized by City Planning to take place on Thursday, May 3, 2021 7:00-9:00 pm. The applicant proposes to demolish the 12 buildings on-site (retail and apartments) and redevelop the lands with a 12-storey (41 metres high) 12, 457.8 square metre condominium building comprised of 109 residential dwelling units, retail space at grade accessible from Yonge Street and 91 parking spaces contained in a 2-level parking structure. Registration details are not yet available – we will forward info as soon as the City sets it up.

BPRO’s Concerns about 3180 Yonge Street

As a first step for community advocacy they have initiated an email and letter-writing campaign in addition to encouraging all to participate in the virtual meeting on May 3.

Everyone is interested in keeping up-to-date with the arrangements for COVID Vaccinations. We have added a section COVID-19 Vaccine to the COVID page on our website. It contains information on the vaccine rollout, government information, new articles, COVID-19 information sites as well as contact information. We will keep this updated as additional information is released.

COVID-19 Case Counts for Bedford Park-Nortown area
The City of Toronto publishes COVID-19 recent case rates (cases with episode dates during the previous 21 days, per 100,000 people) for its 140 defined neighbourhoods. SAHRA has created a graph which shows the case rates since mid-December for Bedford Park – Nortown and its surrounding neighbourhoods. All of SAHRA is within this neighbourhood. Bedford Park – Nortown is shown in red. The graph clearly shows that the case rates within our neighbourhood are not insignificant and they have been rising since the beginning of March.
The City's graph is updated Monday, Wednesday and Friday, except on statutory holidays. SAHRA will update our graph on SAHRA’s website within 24 hours of the City’s update.

Changes to Armour Heights Public School
In our April 5th eBlast, we told you of possible changes to the grade structure at Armour Heights Public School. On April 21, the Board of Trustees of the TDSB decided to adopt the staff report.
The impacts are:
(a) That Armour Heights Public School be converted from a Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6 school to a Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 school, retaining Grade 7 effective September 1, 2021, and Grade 8 effective September 1, 2022;
(b) That the junior to intermediate pathway from Armour Heights Public School to St. Andrew’s Middle School be grandparented for the 2021-22 school year;
(c) That the shared junior attendance boundary between Ledbury Park Elementary and Middle School and Armour Heights Public School be directed entirely to Ledbury Park Elementary and Middle School effective September 1, 2021.“

More Cannabis Stores
Cannabis store licencing is controlled by the Provincial government under the Alcohol and Gaming Commission – the City of Toronto has no say in this matter. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission has now approved 5 stores within an 8-block radius on Upper Avenue. Canada Chemist is also licensed to sell medical cannabis. Now another application has been submitted for 1971 Avenue Road (the former Su Casa) just 5 doors north of an existing store. So now we will be 7! Bike Lanes on Yonge!
In early April, City Council voted 23-1 to approve implementation of Active TO on Yonge Street from Bloor to Davisville beginning July 1 and continuing at least through to the Spring of 2022. Consideration will also be given to extending Active TO further north to Lawrence once this installation is complete. Active TO integrates well with CafeTO which is expanding its presence on Yonge Street as well. This will result in a safer and more enjoyable environment for residents and provide a much needed boost to businesses. The support from the community has been unprecedented and has been noticed and applauded by City Staff and Councillors.
