I don’t know about you, but after fourteen months of being mostly at home, I feel really resentful. I’m not resentful about being at home, about teaching online, about any of that. What I resent, now that performances are coming back and I’m getting out a bit more, is shoes. Seriously! SHOES! Because of that, Kelly’s article this month resonated deeply with me. She writes about making good choices in performance outfits, and she is 100% right—there are ways to be stylish and comfortable at the same time.

We have a wonderful issue for you this month! Along with Kelly’s article we have Keith’s interview with composer Stephen Barr. When I read it, I felt like finding all his music for flute because he is such an interesting and inspiring person. Our NYWC collaboration this month features Sarah Meneely-Kyder’s The Four Elements for flute and piano, and our final offering comes from Coreisa Janelle Lee. She is allowing us to reprint a paper she wrote for her Perspectives in Musicology and Ethnomusicology class, a wonderful exploration of the lives and careers of three African American composers we should all know, although it’s likely that we don’t. So kick off your shoes (SHOES!), get comfortable and enjoy this month’s Flute Examiner. Find your inspiration and feed your soul!
