Discussing the Derek Chauvin Verdict with Students

Resources to support educators process the outcomes of the trial.
George Floyd’s death and Chauvin’s trial amplified the demands for justice and healing in response to racial bias in policing, the disproportionate use of excessive force against Black Americans, and more broadly, the history of racial injustice in the United States. Wellness Month Opportunities for Educators

This FREE community screening of ANGST, an IndieFlix Original documentary, on May 4th from 6pm-8pm, is designed to raise awareness around anxiety. 

The film includes expert advice from mental health professionals, along with interviews from elementary and high school students who discuss how anxiety has impacted their lives. To register, click here.

Professional Development Opportunities

English Learner Roadmap Professional Development for Teachers

Teacher as Language Coach. How can teachers easily and effectively build language
proficiency for their EL/DLL students throughout their daily lessons? This two-hour interactive webinar, including one hour of pre-session asynchronous work, provides teachers with a set of practices that can be quickly integrated into existing lessons and practices, including Designated ELD. Aligned to Principle 2 of the EL Roadmap, participants will learn to effectively identify and address the strengths and needs of English learners by providing targeted scaffolds and supports to actively deepen students’ use of sophisticated academic language for speaking and writing. Teachers will be prepared with tools and resources that can be implemented the next day in their virtual and in-person classrooms. Learn more and register here.

Parenting Series (For K-12 Parents)

The San Mateo County Office of Education is partnering with Adolescent Counseling Services to offer a series of workshops for parents to prevent teen substance abuse. Topics cover establishing boundaries, talking to teens, and understanding adolescent development, substance abuse, and teen trauma. Learn more here.

Break the Vape PSA Contest (For All 6-12 Students)
Due May 10, 2021
Get creative and submit an audio clip, video, or poster to educate fellow teens about the dangers of nicotine addiction and how they can break away from their addition. Educational hip hop group Music Notes will be hosting two writing workshops for students who are interested in submitting a song. Learn more

2021 Bubble Grant (For All K-12 Science Teachers)
Due September 30, 2021
The Silicon Valley Section of the American Chemical Society is offering K-12 science teachers to apply for a bubble grant of up to $1,000 for projects that enhance the teaching of science, technology, and engineering.
