Friends of Warren County Park District

SONDER BREWING FUNDRAISER! Please share with your friends and neighbors! We are partnering with Sonder Brewing for the month of April to raise funds for our Friends of Warren County Park District programs. 10% of their OPERATION STEAM (a tasty lager) sales for the entire month will be donated to our organization, AND on 4/27, they will donate 20%! You can find more info on our official Facebook Event Invitation

Plan on popping by to support a local business and learn more about the Warren County Park District on 4/27 from 4-7pm. I will have some of our official program reptiles with me as well as some taxidermy animals, freebies, and fun stuff to do with your family. Sonder is located at 8584 Duke Blvd, Mason, OH 45040. ~Naturalist Shannon
CICADAS ARE COMING! Are you ready? As the soil temperatures steadily creep up towards 64 degrees Fahrenheit, you may start to see little mounds of soil forming under your trees; those are Brood X cicada nymphs, getting ready to emerge! The nymphs have been underground for 17 years, filling up on the sap from tree roots. Sometime in the next few weeks, the nymphs will crawl out of the ground, attach themselves to the sides of trees, fence posts, houses, etc. and molt one last time. The adult cicadas will emerge from the nymph exoskeletons and take to the skies looking for mates. The males use special organs called tymbals to produce the loud noises we will all be very familiar with in another month or so. The females are silent, except for the occasional wing flick that sounds a bit like snapping fingers.

Once mating has occurred, the females will lay their eggs in tree branches, about 20 at a time, laying around 500 eggs total! The eggs hatch, turn into tiny nymphs that look a bit like termites, and fall to the ground, burying themselves under the soil and subsisting on the sap from plant roots for another 17 years. The part that we humans will notice (from nymph emergence to adult die off) will last about six weeks.

Although they may look like something out of a horror flick, cicadas are beneficial for a number of reasons! They aerate the soil, provide a  natural pruning service for trees, and when the animals' life cycle is complete, their decomposing remains add vital nutrients back into the earth. They also provide an ample food source for just about every animal, including some humans; I'm told they taste like canned asparagus!

Interested in a virtual cicada program for your group of scouts, neighbors, or friends? Drop me a line! ~Naturalist Shannon
