Product Focus Monday

Hemp products and the benefit of using it in your diet

Another week, another Monday, and time for Product Focus Monday.  After this week we are back to full 5-day weeks, and by 16 June it will be just in time for many of us to take a breather.

Today is all about another superfood, hemp.  When hearing hemp the first though is that it is illegal, but although part of the same family, hemp is a normal agricultural plant with thousands of uses.

Hemp

Hemp seeds are a rich source of nutrients.  Part of the hemp plant, these seeds are technically a nut that can be eaten raw or used to make milk, oil, cheese substitutes, or protein powder.

While related to the cannabis plant, hemp seeds have little to none of the psychoactive compound THC found in marijuana.

Hemp seeds contain high levels of antioxidants, fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins.  The shells add fibre to the diet, and grinding the seeds helps the body to absorb more of the other nutrients.

If you are following a plant-based diet and need extra protein, Hemp seeds are your answer.

Hemp seeds outshine chia and flax (linseed) when it comes to protein:  two tablespoons serve up almost 7g, the amount found in two egg whites.  Plus, the protein in hemp seeds contains all essential amino acids, something that's unusual for plant foods.

Consume them raw or just sprinkle a drizzle on your diet, blend them into smoothies and shakes or even make milk out of them. You can add them to your rice, daal, sabzi, salads, fruit-bowls, khichdi, pasta, shakes or juices.

Hemp hearts are raw, shelled hemp seed interiors.  Shelling the hemp seeds allows for more nutrition to be absorbed in eating them since the inner heart of the seed is exposed.  They have a soft texture and a nutty taste.

You can eat them raw as is or sprinkled into smoothies, cereal, or salads or cook them into granola bars, oatmeal, burgers, granola, or pretty much anything really.

Hemp powder is made by grinding pressed hemp seeds into a fine powder.  It has an earthy, nutty taste and is often added to shakes or smoothies to boost protein intake
