month 23:

Striking a ball with a stick

View this email in your browser

Greetings

Around the same time that toddlers start throwing, they also tend to show interest in striking things with sticks. Both of these activities show that their arms are developing more strength and coordination, and toddlers love to explore their new abilities! You can support the ongoing development of their hand-eye and upper-body coordination with the simple activities below.

Activities that you can do

Here are some activities that you can try with your toddler this month to encourage the use of their arms and upper body.
1. Basic striking

Find a short, sturdy, smooth stick. Wrap some hockey tape around one end to make a handle for your child to grip. Find a soft ball, empty plastic bottle, or anything that your child can hit to make it move. In an open space, encourage your toddler to hit the ball or bottle. The noise and the movement will likely please them. As your toddler gets better control with striking, try rolling a large ball towards them to hit.
2. Balloon bopping

Blow up a balloon and show your toddler how you use your fingertips to keep it in the air. Then hold the balloon up for your toddler and encourage them to hit it with their fingertips. If they choose to hold the balloon in their hands and throw it, that’s okay too. Playing with balloons helps children to develop hand-eye coordination and the ability to track objects moving through the air.

And, as your child continues to grow, here is a collection of all of our greatest activities and game ideas for toddlers for you and your little one to try out!
Remember: If your child begins to fuss or cry during an activity, it might be a sign that they're hungry or need a rest.

Tips for your own self-care

One of the best ways to feel good about yourself is to do something good for others. One small change that can have a mighty impact on your neighbourhood is to start “plogging” while you walk or run. The word comes from the combination of the Swedish term “plocka up” (pick up) and jogging. The more you do it, the healthier both you and your favourite trails will be.
