month 18:

Getting outside in all seasons

View this email in your browser

Greetings

It’s important for children of all ages to get outdoors on a regular basis, including toddlers. Play and activity in the outdoors provide special sensory experiences not available inside the home. Being outdoors also builds resilient immune systems and stronger bones. It shouldn’t matter if it's spring, summer, fall, or winter—almost any weather is good for activity outdoors if your toddler is dressed right. In the warm and mild months choose practical clothes over style, and during the winter months make sure your toddler is dressed warmly with the right kinds of winter wear.

Activities that you can do

Here are some outdoor activities you can try with your toddler this month depending on the weather.
1. Bring toys outdoors

Entice your toddler to play outside by bringing indoor toys out of the house. Kitchen toys such as plastic bowls, cups, and saucers can be used to hold leaves and snow. Cars and trucks can be fun to push in sand and mud. The change in environment can inspire your child to explore new ways of playing with familiar toys.
2. Outdoor water painting

Imaginative water play is perfect for summer. Fill a bucket with water and give your toddler a paint brush or a mini foam roller. Show your toddler how to “paint” your fence or your house with water.
Remember: If your child begins to fuss or cry during an activity, it might be a sign that they're hungry or need a rest.

Tips for your own self-care

It’s ironic, isn’t it? When we most need to take time for self-care, it often feels like we’ve got no time for it. The good news is that self-care can be very simple. Here are 10 ways you can fit in self-care every day, even if you literally have only one minute to spare.
