Editorial
Today we are happy to announce our very first virtual dialogue in French on 18 May and would like to remind you that there are only a few days left to register for the EADI/ISS General Conference with the early bird fee! We've got two new blog posts which reflect on how embeddedness in hierarchical, patriarchal and colonial underpinnings affects PhD research, and how the role of the Indian State has changed over the last decades. The thematic focus of today's publication picks is on migration, and once again we've collected a broad range of online events from our member community, as well as vacancies, open calls and blogs.

Why Positionalities Matter and What They Have to do with Knowledge Production
"All three of us were travelling with colonial baggage that we carried due to either being from the West or having been educated in the West, and the fact that we were all sent as part of an uncomfortable and institutionally asymmetric constellation of knowledge hierarchies in which it is always the Westerner, the Western-educated, or the Western-affiliated who has the authority to produce legitimate knowledge." State and Development: What Has Changed in India?
In this post Anthony P. D'Costa discusses the changing role of the Indian state over the last decades by pursuing three broad threads: "the changing nature of the relationship between state and capital and the mediating role of society in influencing developmental outcomes; the seemingly contradictory roles of the state in undertaking major state-sponsored social programs and the opening of greater spaces for the market; and the dynamic relationship between state and the form of democracy under changing political regimes." Only lately under the currently ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Indian state has "turned to an “electoral autocracy”, a far cry from the accommodative state that believed in protecting people’s rights, pursued social inclusion, and relied on a pluralist, democratic foundation of India." Congratulations! AISSR's Joyeeta Gupta receives  €2.5 million for research on divesting from fossil fuels. Her research will look into the roles of the various different stakeholders and develop tools to help them all move towards climate-resilient change and inclusive development. Read more

Highlight: Social Science Research and COVID-19
Academics and researchers working in International Development face a number of predicted changes to the research environment and landscape in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, especially in relation to fieldwork conducted in middle-and lower-income countries. This working paper by the Global Development Institute (GDI) in Manchester is designed to provide researchers and research teams with an understanding of how to manage these changes at all stages of the research process, placing a particular focus on issues of safeguarding and collaborative research.
