Talking Climate Action

This month, our focus is on climate action. If you're receiving this newsletter, chances are you care about the environment and want to join in the effort to combat climate change. You might also feel frustrated by the lack of progress, or even feel powerless to help. The one thing we cannot afford to do is to stop talking about climate change. We have an amazing collection of blog articles being published this month, offering up-to-date information on the challenges and breakthroughs in the field of climate action. If you're wanting something a little bit more practical, we've also provided a handy list of five things you can do in your personal life to take part in climate action. We're also sharing the latest buzz on things outside the Hive that you may wish to check out to help you keep the conversation going. We simply can't keep quiet and leave climate change to run its course. Keep raising awareness in your communities and pressing for change.

We are pleased to announce that our research group’s paper on "Assessing the Sustainability Performance of Entities: A review and classification of tools, methods, and approaches" has been selected for presentation at this year’s International New Business Model Conference, held at Halmstad, Sweden. It is a result of the collaboration between Morris Fedeli from the University of Southern Queensland (Australia) and Martin Glinik from the University of Graz (Austria), both colleagues from the research arm of THRIVE Project. A link to the paper will be made available on our resource page in due course.

1. Go meat-free next month

Yes, meat is delicious. It’s also really bad for the environment. From methane emissions to supply-train transport to calorie density, the meat and seafood production cycle is one of the key contributors to climate change. There are tons of meat alternatives out there now, so take next month to try them out and give the environment a break. Even if you can’t give it up permanently, trying a month meat-free can help reduce demand and spark conversations about the negative impact the meat industry has.

2. Ditch the plastic

Mass-produced disposable plastic has led to an enormous amount of plastic waste, polluting our oceans and introducing microplastics into the food-chain. While there have been innovative breakthroughs in reducing the plastics already in the ocean, it’s important that we drastically reduce our consumption rate. If you’re searching for ideas on how to reduce your reliance on plastic, we have a great article to help you out.

3. Plant some (native) trees

Trees do a lot of good for the environment. They produce the oxygen we need to breathe while absorbing the co2 that’s already in the environment. Planting them can be a great way to get out and do something to combat climate change. However, it’s important to be mindful of what kind of tree you’re planting and if it’s suitable for the local ecosystem. Thrive recommends treesforlife as an evidence-based environmentally conscious tree-planting organisation.

4. Get some sun

Renewable energy sources are clean, sustainable, and more affordable than you think. Harness the power of the sun by installing some solar panels. Or maybe just turn off the lights and aircon and open the windows! You can also look into switching electricity providers, to ones that uses sustainable energy sources like wind and solar.

5. Use your voice

Keep spreading awareness in your local community, online, wherever you talk to people. The more people are aware of this issue and the things they can do to combat climate change, the better our chances of making a sustainable future. Politics is important too, make sure you vote to protect the environment and take action to save the planet. And of course, tell people all about THRIVE!
