Weekly Update, April 30, 2021

Dear Members & Friends,

There’s a neighborhood ice cream shop in my hometown called the Dari-Delight.  It’s a pretty typical small town ice cream shop, with sandwiches, French fries, milkshakes and cones.  I’ve always found ice cream to be pretty delightful, especially a chocolate and vanilla twist cone on a warm summer evening.

Where do you find delight in your life?  Friends and family?  Travel?  Work?  Faith?  Ice cream?  All of these can be delightful.  All of these may also falter.  True delight for the Christian comes not from worldly things, but from the Lord Jesus.  “Christ greatly delights in his people” wrote the Puritan theologian John Owen, “and they greatly delight in him.”  Take a moment to reflect.  Christ delights in you, who you are as a beloved child of God.

To delight in Christ is to delight in someone who never falters, who never takes a misstep, who never disappoints, who loves us sacrificially at the cost of His life.  This is true delight.

Around the time I was ordained someone gave me some sound advice: the only way to make everyone happy is to sell ice cream.  I still enjoy a good cone, but for true delight Jesus doesn’t disappoint.

Peace & Prayers,
Pastor Tony

"Blanket Sunday" -- May 9, 2021
Through the Church World Service (CWS) organization, the Deacons and Presbyterian Women have sponsored the purchase of blankets for those in need worldwide for many years. This program gives a kind, loving, tangible response to someone facing a difficult time, reminding them they are not alone.

This is a First Church tradition we observe each Mother's Day. Next Sunday (May 9th), the Presbyterian Women (PW) are taking the lead. PW asks that you purchase a blanket
IN HONOR or IN MEMORY OF someone who has "blanketed" you with love and care. Suggested price for a blanket is $10, but all donations are welcome. Please make checks payable to PRESBYERIAN WOMEN ("blanket" on memo line), and place them in the offering plate or mail them to the church office (2A N. Hanover St.), including the names of those you are honoring or remembering, A  bulletin insert listing participants will be available the following week.  (NOTE:  If you will not be AT worship next Sunday to fill out a slip, feel free to get the info to the office in any form that is easiest for you -- e.g., in the text of an email (fpcarl@pa.net); as an attachment to an e-mail; phone call (243-4612).

During the period January thru June 2020, CWS distributed 20,428 blankets and school or hygiene kits in the US; and 19,522 internationally.  Read more about this organization at: cwsblankets.org
