The Year so Far!

2021 has been quite the busy year so far as the need for our services remains sky high. Family Promise NNCC continues to operate our two shelter programs and our two community programs in addition to working with the County at the Hope Center, and the State on Project Hope. Below is a snapshot of our outputs/outcomes for the year so far.

John & Nancy Find Their Way Home

John was born and raised in Delaware. This State is all he knows, which is why it came as a shock when his stepfather decided the family was going to move to Florida. John’s life was in Delaware – his friends, girlfriend, school, job, everything he knew was here, but John followed his stepfather’s wishes, and moved to Florida with his family.

Shortly after moving to Florida, John discovered his girlfriend Nancy was pregnant. Immediately, John knew he had to come back, he knew he had a responsibility to be a good and present father. John returned to Delaware, but when he returned, John found himself in a vulnerable position. The only family that he could rely on was in Florida and his previous job wasn’t hiring as a result of COVID19. John stayed with Nancy’s family for a while, but after their daughter was born, there was simply not enough room for all of them. John and Nancy found themselves homeless in the midst of a pandemic.

“I was terribly depressed. Just nothing seemed to ever work out – whenever it seemed as though things would get better, something always fell through. Landlords wouldn’t accept me into housing because I didn’t have a job, and employers wouldn’t hire me because I didn’t have a stable address.” John and Nancy were stuck in a vicious cycle, and they needed help – Family Promise provided that help.

Thankfully, John and Nancy were referred to and received shelter at the Hope Center. While at the Hope Center, Felicia, our Case Manager worked with John and Nancy to quickly end their homelessness by securing employment and stable housing in under two months!

John struggled to maintain a job without reliable transportation. Around the same time, a generous supporter donated their vehicle providing John with the stable transportation he and his family needed.

“There’s no better feeling than locking your door at the end of the day, and knowing that you have a place of your own, a place for your family to be safe. I was so used to being disappointed, to things going wrong, plans falling through, but that never happened with Family Promise. Their name says it all, they promised they would help, and a few months later we’re back on our feet. Felicia always stuck with us – there aren’t even words to describe how thankful we are”.

John and Nancy are looking towards the future to ensure they’re able to provide the best life possible for their daughter, and newborn son! John has his sights set on getting a Master’s in Behavioral Health Therapy and homeownership!

Volunteer Appreciation Week

Volunteers are the backbone of Family Promise. The unique model of our programs is only made possible by the overwhelming support of our volunteers. Volunteers donate their time, money, physical and emotional support to families experiencing homelessness. Here at Family Promise, our volunteers are part of our family.

The direct interaction between volunteers and families develops into a lasting emotional connection. This relationship and emotional connection felt by families, is one of the primary motivating factors on their road to securing permanent housing. This emotional connection is the cornerstone of our organization and one of the primary reasons why our programs are the most effective in the state.

Our volunteers are always incredible, but sticking with us through a pandemic is absolutely “out of this world”!  Thank you all, for your dedication in supporting our mission! Our Community Engagement Manager Andrea Cox hosted a drive by Volunteer Appreciation event Saturday, April 24th, to honor, appreciate, and showcase just how "out of this world" our volunteers are!

June 12th - Virtual Highmark Walk

What is a Virtual Walk?
Walkers will not all be walking at a single location at a specific time this year - rather teams for non-profits will walk at a place/time convenient for them. Anytime on June 12th you and your team choose how and when you walk (treadmill, park or trail, or around the neighborhood) – it’s your choice!  You also pick the time of when you start and stop! While we won't all be physically walking together, we'll be united spiritually as we're all walking on the same day supporting a singular cause - preventing and ending homelessness for families.

Can I Form a Walk Team?
Yes! Form a team & walk with your friends, neighbors, congregants, etc.! While we won’t be able to all walk together, teams can schedule a group walk on June 12th. This is a great opportunity to get outside and seem some familiar faces we haven't seen in a while due to COVID19. Take pictures, document your walk, and have fun!

Benefits of donating:
Register as a walker & Donate $30 = a walk t-shirt!
Register as a walker & Donate $50 = a raffle ticket
Any donation made will be matched up to $2,500!
Donating isn’t a requirement to participate! You can join a team or walk individually in support of FP!

Anyone who would like to form a team, please reach out to Tyler at tyler@familypromisede.org
  • Walk captains are responsible for creating walks teams. Captains recruit friends, family, neighbors or anyone looking to support a good cause.

A Slight Return to Normalcy

Wednesday April 21st, our entire staff received our second dose of the COVID19 vaccine at the Hope Center! Our entire staff is now vaccinated! We're excited to come back into the office fulltime! For the past year, our staff has staggered staff hours to minimize contact in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID19. It's a small step back to normal, but we're incredibly happy that our staff will now all be available, safely on site, 9-5pm once again.

New Website Pages - Stories & Data

We've added a few new pages to our website! We recently added a a "Family Journey" page and a "Homelessness Data" Page. The Family Journey page highlights many of the journeys our families have taken on their pathway to permanent housing. The Homelessness Data page showcases infographics that highlight homelessness and housing data within the State of Delaware.
