A Note from Jen
During a recent visit with my mother, I found myself reflecting on time as a gift. My mom and my daughter have birthdays that are exactly 60 years and one week apart – my mom Dorene will turn 78 years old just one week after my daughter Jessica turns 18 in May. As our family prepares for Jess to graduate high school and depart for college 260 miles away, we are also preparing for our lives without my mom, whose health has taken a significant hit due to imposed quarantine and limited interaction with family and friends. While the last year+ has given my daughter and me more time together than I could have dreamed of (thanks to at-home schooling and the cancellation of many extracurricular activities), the opposite has been true for my mom and me. Her assisted living facility didn’t allow visitors into the building until just a few weeks ago, which significantly impacted our bi-monthly visits.

I can almost see these two remarkable women moving away from me in two different
directions – one into her future, the other into my past – and I have realized that the biggest gift I can give them both as they continue on their journeys without me is time.
  • I can spend minutes and hours with both of them, listening to their thoughts and dreams, concerns and complaints, or even just sharing quiet moments together.
  • I can rewind time for my mother, recounting memories of things she’s forgotten about and reminding her of moments that were important to me growing up.
  • I can look into the future for my daughter and share my life experiences, hoping they guide her in the coming years, at school and beyond.
  • I can hold a loving and grateful space for the precious moments I have with them both, noticing and savoring them when they happen, like having a good laugh with my mom or listening when my talented daughter wants to share the most recent song she wrote.
