FMI Releases Annual “Power of Produce” Report

This month FMI--The Food Industry Association released its annual “Power of Produce” report that is conducted by 210 Analytics and supported by data from IRI.

The comprehensive report indicated that produce department sales reached $69.6 billion in 2020, an increase of 11.4% largely attributed to increased in-home cooking and trends related to health and well-being. Shoppers who were surveyed as part of the study said that they are purchasing more produce than they were prior to the health crisis as they bought more fresh fruit (up 8.9%) and vegetables (up 14.2%)

In the slide presentation of the report, which was presented at the Southeast Produce Council (SEPC) Southern Exposure convention, mushrooms were referred to as a retail ‘powerhouse,’ showing the 10th highest sales contribution and 4th highest in year-over-year sales growth in 2020 led only by oranges, cherries, and potatoes.

The presentation also included the Produce for Better Health Foundation (PBH) “Have a Plant” retail point of sale materials that feature fresh mushrooms.
