URI researchers launch RICHAMP website

CRC’s University of Rhode Island partners have developed a website showcasing how their Center-funded projects help local, state and federal end users in the Northeast.

Tools from two CRC projects – "Modeling the Combined Coastal and Inland Hazards from High-Impact Hurricanes
" (led by Isaac Ginis) and "Hazard Consequence Threshold Models for Emergency Management and Response Decision Making" (led by Austin Becker) – are featured on the new website richamp.org. Named for “Rhode Island Coastal Hazards, Analysis, Modeling & Prediction,” the site focuses on Analysis of Impacts, Modeling, Prediction System and Visuals. The site also includes descriptions of four case studies in which the tools have been used for real-world and simulated hazard impacts.

For more information, visit richamp.org.

CRC to be featured at 2021 COE Summit

There is still time to sign up for the 2021 COE Summit, a free event featuring CRC May 19-20, 2021. Hosted by the DHS Centers of Excellence (COE), this virtual event offers a unique opportunity for COE researchers to connect and network with DHS components, federal, state and local stakeholders, as well as industry partners.

The event will feature:

  • Keynote talks by DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson (Chair of the House Homeland Security Committee).
  • Panels on public-private partnerships, tools for decision-makers (featuring CRC staff and partners) and the DHS workforce of the future, among others.
  • A judged student poster competition featuring several students from CRC projects.
  • A live demo showcasing tools and capabilities from CRC and other COEs.

Current and former students from a joint Oregon State University/Colorado State University present a poster as part of the 2021 CRC virtual annual meeting

Student posters, presentations from annual meeting available

At CRC’s annual PI meeting held virtually from April 21-22, 2021, Center investigators made presentations about the first six years of their research and education projects. The audience included federal stakeholders and reviewers, CRC Advisory Board members,  additional partners, students and colleagues. Potential future work for the coming year was discussed on the second day of the meeting.

As part of this meeting, the Center opened up the floor for more than 20 students from CRC-supported projects, who showed off their work in a virtual “poster hall.”
We have placed a collection of prerecorded poster presentations on our website. These presentations are also on a playlist that you can view on our YouTube page

CRC in the news

As we approach the Atlantic hurricane season, CRC researchers have been in the news discussing improvements to federal forecasting capabilities and how to improve planning for disasters. Donald Hornstein of the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law speaks as part of the Natural Hazards Resilience Speakers Series

Watch webinars and speakers series recordings from CRC partners

Students from CRC education programs and research projects have been regularly contributing to the Center’s blog, including students enrolled in our spring speakers series as well as summer research experiences. This month, we have added blog posts from students at UNC-Chapel Hill who dove into the research behind the topics in our Natural Hazards Resilience Speakers Series.

We post recordings of presentations made by guest speakers as part of our annual Natural Hazards Speakers Series on the CRC website and YouTube.

At the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez, project leaders have opened up talks to students and the broader community. You can view the recordings on the project website.

Carolinas Climate Resilience Conference May 10-12

The CRC is a planning partner for this year’s Carolinas Climate Resilience Conference, to be held May 10-12 mostly in a hybrid virtual and in-person format, with in-person events at the Durham Convention Center in Durham, N.C. Held biennially, the event supports on-the-ground resilience efforts by providing managers and regional experts with an opportunity to share lessons learned and discuss resources and tools for incorporating climate information into their work.

Registration is open for the event, and more information can be found at https://www.cisa.sc.edu/ccrc.
