TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK

National Teacher Appreciation Week in May honors those men and women who have dedicated their lives to educating the masses. They have chosen to educate and inspire the minds of our young people, while developing and encouraging their talents and skills. Our teachers have provided our students with the tools and resources they will build upon for the rest of their lives. Not only do they educate, but they also serve as mentors and guide our youth, too!
Wayne Local School District takes this week to recognize our teachers and their hard work and dedication to teaching our youth. This year has been unique to every last teacher in the district, with many challenges and hurdles along the way, but our teachers have embraced the uniqueness, and risen to the challenge!
We appreciate our teachers for everything they do to make a difference in the lives of our students and to help make our school a better place for all!
SCHOOL BUS DRIVER APPRECIATION DAY - MAY 3, 2021
The Ohio legislature has proclaimed this day and/or week that Ohioans have an opportunity to reflect on the outstanding job performance of more than 15,000 school bus drivers who transport students to and from school and school-related events throughout the year. Please take a moment to thank the men and women working in your transportation department for the work they do to keep Ohio’s children safe each day.
Wayne Local School Administration would like to recognize these individuals who make up our Transportation Department, and who do such an amazing job of getting our students from home to school and back again at the end of the day. These groups are especially important to the whole of our business, and today, we give them special thanks!
School Lunch Hero Day is celebrated Friday, May 7, 2021. Wayne Local School District has the most hardworking and best food service professionals around! We take this week to appreciate their hard work and dedication to their jobs and preparing healthy meals for our Wayne Local students. They have many tasks at hand as they adhere to strict nutritional standards and navigate student food allergies, all while serving up with a smile. They are true heroes in every sense of the word and we appreciate all that they do!

When the aging king of a Magical Kingdom (England) decides to split his empire between his three daughters, Cinderella, Belle, and the Snow Queen (who in no way resembles a copyrighted character), terrible tragedy ensues. Terrible, hilarious tragedy. Combining the gut-wrenching plot twists of Game of Thrones, and the soul-numbing despair of Shakespearean tragedy, this adaptation of King Lear will leave you dying with laughter as the body count mounts. When you play the Game of Tiaras, you win or you die.
WAYNESVILLE ART SHOW 2021
The Waynesville Art Show was a huge success this week as the gym was transformed into an art gallery showcasing the works of art of our students, and even some from our staff members! As you can tell from the photos above, there was a ton of art to show off, and the setting up, display arrangements, and tear down took a lot of work! We were impressed and awed at the talent of our students, and truly thank our Art Department for bringing this event to our district and community this year.
Our Art Department is amazing and we thank them for their dedication, encouragement, and inspiration to our incredibly talented students.
Sports Physicals are coming - May 18th!
Kettering Health Network Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Associates of Southwest Ohio, and Wayne Local Schools are collaborating to provide a full, comprehensive sports physical for athletes at Wayne Local Schools entering grades 7-12 for the 2021-22 school year.

High School Marine Biology 2022 Trip Information Meeting

If you are interested in the Marine Biology Trip next school year, come after school for a meeting in Mr. Hardin’s Room (SL-1) on Wednesday, May 7th or Thursday, May 8th. There will be a parents informational meeting on May 11th at 7 p.m. in Mr. Hardin’s room (SL-1) in the high school.
Students attending the trip must have already completed Biology 1 by the end of this school year and must be in good academic/disciplinary standing. The camp will be taught by two Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School teachers - this year, one math and one science, Jessie and Chrissy - assisted by an administrator and several CJ alumni and local and global practicing STEMM professionals.

- Team collaboration - hands-on innovative and creative design and build challenges
- Variety of STEMM topics and content
- Guest facilitators and field trips - local STEMM employers and practitioners (in-person and/or virtual, as appropriate)
- Global STEMM applications for the common good and to aid in solving global challenges and furthering the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, such as access to clean water, environmental stewardship, transportation, health care and medicine, and information technology.
- The camp is facilitated by CJ science, engineering, and biomedical science instructors, and small teams of campers are matched with CJ high school student assistant team leaders.
- Morning snacks are provided Monday - Friday, campers bring packed lunches Monday - Thursday, and lunch is provided on Friday.
- On Friday afternoon of camp week, parents are invited to a concluding Camp Showcase.
- Public health protocols and regulations mandated by the state and required by CJ will be followed and communicated to registered camp families prior to the start of camp. At this time, we anticipate a mask requirement and social distancing to remain in effect. The CJ facility and spaces used during the camp will continue to be cleaned according to heightened levels as well.
- Our camp generally fills up quickly, so I encourage families to register their sons and daughters soon. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Waynesville After Prom Committee
Congratulations Landen Stricker!
Landen Stricker was presented with the Eagle Scout Award at a ceremony on Saturday, April 10th. Landen installed 1,000 feet of fiber optic cable to provide wi-fi to Butler Springs Christian Camp as his Eagle Scout project. He had to organize a group of other scouts, as well as coordinate the project.
Landen started as a Tiger Cub in First Grade and has provided hundreds of hours of community service over the years. Thank you Landen and congratulations on this prestigious award!
Busy Bees
Last Wednesday, first graders got to experience beekeeping first hand. Thanks to our very own teacher, Mrs. Shaffer, for sharing what it is like being a bee keeper. Mrs. Shaffer has been keeping bees for over ten years and shared some great insight with first graders. The students learned that bees are a very important creature in our world and that their honey is super sweet! The teachers taught about insects and discussed the jobs bugs have in the world. One goal was to teach students not to be afraid of the crawly creatures. Mrs. Shaffer shared how she takes care of her bees, how she collects bees, and how she carefully harvests their honey. Students were able to see bee cells up close too! Thanks Mrs. Shaffer for a great lesson on honey bees!
"That's My Boy" Award
Congratulations to Jake Amburgy for being named a finalist for the Ohio That’s My Boy Award presented by the National Football Foundation.
On April 22, 2021, the Maketewah Country Club in Cincinnati played host to the 54th annual National Football Foundation's scholar-athlete awards banquet, which honored premier high school football stars in Southwest Ohio.
Alaina Spencer, Valedictorian
Alaina is planning to continue attending Wright State University after graduation, in pursuit of a Bachelors of Science in Physics. Alaina has been attending WSU since her sophomore year of high school. As a student of Waynesville High School, Alaina has participated in marching band, including state competitions her freshmen and junior years. She is also an accomplished musician having earned a "superior" rating on her oboe solo at OMEA Solo and Ensemble Contest three times (freshmen, sophomore, and junior years). She also earned a chair in the OMEA District XIII Honor Band three times and earning a first chair oboe her junior year. In her spare time, Alaina enjoys playing music on a variety of instruments including the ukulele, oboe, clarinet, piano, and bass guitar. She also enjoys listening to music, watching anime, drawing, and baking.
Alaina is the daughter of mother Holli Spencer and father Blaine Spencer.
Hannah Gill, Salutatorian
Hannah is planning to study Zoology at The Ohio State University. As a student at Waynesville High School, Hannah has served as an officer of the National Honor Society, HS Student Council Senior Vice-President, high school varsity soccer team captain and named second team all state, foreign language club officer, and was a state qualifier in cross country and state runner up on the varsity basketball team. Outside of school activities, Hannah likes to read, swim, and hike, or anything outdoors.
Hannah is the daughter of Don and Ann Gill.

As we head to the end of our school year, we are beginning to plan our annual sixth grade auction. This is such a great event for our kids and the culmination of our incentive program. We try to make this event as exciting as possible for the students. Not only to have some fun, but also to reward them for their hard work all year long! We are always looking for donations towards the auction and are not picky at all about the items we receive. If you are interested in donating any items, we would be eager to take them off your hands. We are including a list of some of the items the kids love to bid on, so if you have any of these treasures at home or would like to purchase for us, it would be greatly appreciated.

FREE CLASS "A" BREAKFAST AND LUNCHES WILL CONTINUE THROUGH END OF SCHOOL YEAR.
Wayne Local Schools are pleased to announce that we are able to extend the free class "A" breakfast and lunch from the Spartan cafes through the end of the school year. This is available to ALL ON-CAMPUS WAYNESVILLE STUDENTS.
This program is available and in partnership with the Ohio Department of Education and the USDA.
*Note: This program will not waive your child's school fees. In order to apply for school fee waiver, please complete a 2020-21 Free and Reduced Lunch Application. This application also helps qualify the district for additional federal and state funding. The application may be handed in to the High School, Middle School, Elementary or Central Offices.
