Who Stole My Gardening Gene? - Note of humor from the Editor

What I’d like to know is...who stole my gardening gene?

My grandfather had a lush and verdant garden that stretched on for acres. He grew so many vegetables, he had to give them away. Vegetables weren’t as popular back then. His neighbors used to hide when they saw him coming.

He raised just about every variety of vegetable that could be grown in the northeast, even horseradish. As a kid, I always wondered why he’d grow that crop when he didn't even have a horse.

Then there was my father who, when he wasn’t working out of town. had quite the knack for gardening. However, his  outdoor plantation was no match for my mother’s indoor jungle. Who knew houseplants would thrive so well in a nicotine-filled hothouse?

As for me…even succulents beg store owners not to let me take them home. I’m probably the only person with a cactus graveyard in my window box.

Honestly, it makes me sad. At work, we were selling gardening kits as a fundraiser. I actually thought about buying one. The Master Gardeners Club formed a brigade in front of the cashier to prevent it.

I still remember fondly when my husband and I bought our first house in Sleepy Hollow. I was so excited as I looked out on the back yard for the first time, imagining the beautiful terraced garden filled with roses and honeysuckle on trellises, tall glorious sunflowers, and beds of tulips, pansies, peonies and petunias cascading down the side of the hill. I soon found out this gardener’s dream was a non-gardeners nightmare. I had a reputation for for my glorious crop of poison ivy.  When my daughters went out to play, I dressed them like little hockey players, complete with knee pads and helmets to prevent contact with it.

It's really too bad no one has figured out how to turn poison ivy into a cash crop. I bet I could corner the market.
