Dear <<First Name>>,

I confess... I'm not always good at remembering special days - like Mother's Day, or some of those things on my to-do list.  In case you're like that too, I have three reminders for you today...

1)  Don't forget mom
2) Remember the Statewide Meeting
3) Take action today on AB 857

Mom has to come first...

Once upon a time, I had a tire blow out on the freeway.  It made for an exciting and somewhat frightening morning drive into town, but I was so thankful for the nice highway patrolman who pulled over to wait with me for the tow truck.  At the time, I had a window sticker on my minivan which had a message about motherhood.  That highway patrolman thanked me for the reminder - Mother's Day was only a couple of days away, and he hadn't yet picked up something nice for mom...

Sometimes we all need a reminder.

Similarly, I so appreciated the reminder I received this week from our friends in Carpinteria about their CWA Mother's Day Basket Fundraiser.  It's a great opportunity to pick up something nice for Mom and support CWA at the same time...
The gift basket contains:  Carpinteria-grown plants, an Avocado Towel with custom graphic by John Wulbrandt, a Mug and tea, Avocado Oil and assorted fruit.  (Some items shown are just a sample, and dependent on availability.)  The baskets are $40.  All proceeds will benefit CWA Carpinteria-Santa Barbara's Ag scholarship program.

To order, click here to email Elizabeth or call her:  805-331-5377.  Please place your order by May 1 so they have time to assemble your basket.  The supply is limited, so order soon!  They deliver free in the Carpinteria area, but I've been assured that they will work with us, their sisters to the south...

And to all our CWA moms, grandmas, great-grandmas, aunts, step-moms, adoptive moms, birth-moms, and special-friends-who-are-just-like-moms, please know that you are valued and appreciated.

Be a Voice for CWA

Every year in May, CWA members from all over the state converge in Sacramento to educate our legislators about the importance of California Agriculture, and encourage them to keep our farmers and ranchers in mind as they make decisions on our behalf.

This year our May Statewide Meeting will be a one-day meeting with guest speakers and legislators. The meeting will be on Zoom Monday, May 3rd, starting at 8:00 am. Barbara LeVake and Carol Chandler will be our moderators.  We do plan on having time for Q&A.

As you know, our May statewide meeting planning is generally fluid and subject to last-minute changes due to the legislative session schedule. Please be patient as we make changes where needed.

We have a great lineup of speakers:

  • Dee Dee D’Adamo, State Water Board Member
  • Taylor Roschen, CA Farm Bureau
  • Senator Anna Caballero
  • Senator Brian Dahle
  • Senator Melissa Hurtado
  • Assembly Member Carlos Villapudua
  • Assembly Member Robert Rivas

CWA looks forward to seeing you all on Zoom Monday, May 3rd !!  And remember, when you sign up ant attend, your registration fees will be reimbursed by VC-CWA.  Please let us know if you're planning to attend!

One final quick reminder and a Call to Action from our friends at Western Growers.  Here is their message:

We urge you to reach out to your California State Assemblymember, asking them to vote NO on AB 857.

AB 857 attempts to:

  • change the law by expanding the definition of “voluntary” and “mandated” travel time;
  • add new situations whereby travel time would be required to be paid to H-2A employees;
  • go well beyond existing court decisions by requiring that the travel time be paid at the regular rate of pay; and
  • require employers to provide redundant information to employees, creating potential liability when the employer provides the information in one notice, but not another.

This bill significantly mirrors SB 1102 (Monning) which was vetoed by Governor Newsom late last year. In his veto message, the Governor directed the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency to develop and maintain the employee notification template contemplated in SB 1102 since it is a process that can more readily take into consideration changes in H-2A governing law and any future court decisions. We strongly believe that the Governor’s direction outlined in the veto message should proceed without the interference of AB 857.

AB 857 could be heard on the Assembly Floor any day now. Please contact your State Assemblymember TODAY and request that they oppose AB 857.
