#5 circular meat processing, future leaders and frisbee golf!

Highlights

In late April the Fight Food Waste CRC and Stop Food Waste Australia delivery teams, the Fight Food Waste Ltd Board, and our students converged on Hahndorf, Adelaide. The week included discussions around business development and next big projects for the Fight Food Waste CRC, including some game-changers like regional transformation hubs and on-pack food labelling. Also on the agenda was the launch and roll out of the Australian Food Pact and sector action plans for Stop Food Waste Australia, plus some time for important frisbee golf in the great outdoors!

Have you ever thought about the processing waste in the meat industry that occurs before the product reaches your plate? Leading researchers from the University of Southern Queensland have been working with red meat processor Australian Country Choice to look at opportunities for closed loop concepts to create value from waste streams. The final report is now available on our website, as well as a short video from Senior Research Fellow Dr Stephan Tait.

Here at the Fight Food Waste CRC, a really important part of the work that we do is training the future leaders of the Australian food industry. We quite obviously named this our Future Leaders Program, where our students undertake professional development and personal mentoring in addition to their postgraduate studies. Their first ‘camp’ was also recently held at Hahndorf, and involved a meet and greet with the Board.
