Goodbyes are Never Easy
By Colleen Soldate
Some of our church family and friends have moved out of the area to say Hello to new adventures, which means we must say Goodbye. Though we miss them, we wish them well and pray for God to use them in their new locations. Some told us of their move; others we were unable to provide details.
Brian, Cindy, and Iris Avenell moved to Louisville, Colorado near Boulder for Brian’s new job. Iris is in the 7th grade, making new friends, and learning the flute. Cindy is learning the violin. They have found a Christian community at Grace Commons Church.
Mike and Laura Babbini have made their residence in Cottonwood, CA their permanent home. They enjoy the beauty and relaxation of nature while looking out their window to see Mt. Lassen and a nearby river. Laura shares, “I wouldn’t be the person I am today, if it weren’t for growing up at First Presbyterian Church.”
Norma Doyle moved to Portland, Oregon to be near her daughter. Norma said, “I will miss the people and fellowship most of all. I am grateful for Zoom, for it has been the one thing during the pandemic that has kept us connected.”
Kirk, Jaime, Whitney, Reese, and Marlo Gorman moved to Rocklin, CA last year. Due to a work promotion for Kirk as an attorney for Sonoma County’s Department of Child Support, they are in the process of moving back to Santa Rosa.
Betty Ketchum moved to Gilroy to be closer to her daughters. She attends Trinity Bible Church in Morgan Hill.
Michelle Huntley’s job opportunity enticed her to move Watsonville. She reports, “This job allows me to dig into something and put my stamp on it. No matter where I move, I gain friends along the way.”
Jessica, Robert, Lucas, Ryan, and Jenna LaCroix moved to Utah.
Whitney MacLean moved back to Carmichael, CA where she grew up. She reports, “Although I miss the fellowship and activities at FPC, I have discovered a wonderful church family at Carmichael Presbyterian Church and find joy in my job of working with developmentally disabled students.”
Jocelyn McCord moved back to where she grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. She joined the Bell Choir at Aldersgate Methodist Church and is excited to be close to her daughter, Ally and family— husband Eric, and granddaughter Ella, and second granddaughter due in September.
Carrie Morris recalled how she and Steve vacationed in the Pacific Northwest and hoped to retire there. The combination of Steve’s death, rising cost of living in Sonoma County, and COVID-19, caused Carrie to speed up the timing of this goal, despite not yet retired. She, along with her Mom, Marilyn Cook moved to Ashland, Oregon.
Eric, Shawna, McKenna, and Mallory Rundstrom moved to Spokane, Washington as Shawna explained, “The changes experienced due to COVID-19, made us realize how much we needed to be closer to family. We miss our friends in Santa Rosa even though we attend a wonderful church here.”
Don & Marvae Sutherland relocated to Pennsylvania.
Preparing for In-Person Worship
Pentecost Sunday, May 23 – 9:00 & 10:30 AM
When we resume in-person worship starting May 23, 202l, due to health and safety precautions, sanctuary seating will be limited to 90-100 people per worship service. We will use a reservation system for you to indicate your preferred worship time and seating section on a first come-first serve basis.
When you make a reservation, you will be asked to sign an agreement indicating you will follow health and safety guidelines. Once inside the building you will be greeted by someone who will take your temperature before making your way into the sanctuary or to Kids Church or Youth Rendezvous. After worship we plan to serve light refreshments (safely) on the McDonald lawn area.
Nominating Committee is Underway
Members of the Nominating Committee—Jennifer Averbuck, Jim Bankson, Jeff deRecat, Diane Niles, Bruce Purcell, Luke Shoulders, and Carolee Verdier—are in the process of discerning God’s choice of people to serve as elders and deacons. Please pray for their task as well as the members they call upon to consider serving in these important roles of leadership for our congregation.

This Month’s Theme
In May, First Kids will discover it takes COMMITMENT to build our faith. Each week we will focus on a faith skill: READ God’s Word, PRAY to the Lord consistently, TALK about God with friends, and LIVE out our faith every day. We kick off the month with something Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 9:24-25. So run in a way that will get you the prize. All who take part in the games train hard, (NIrV). Hey kids, let’s put on our running shoes and let's start training!

Movie Discussion Group
Friday, May 14 at 7:00 PM
Please view The Hate U Give (PG13) before our next discussion on Friday, May 14, at 7:00 PM. Both relevant and powerfully honest, the film tells the story of Starr, a 16-year-old girl who is passionate about basketball and cares deeply for her friends, but who also struggles to find her place in a world distorted by ignorance and racial injustice. Although the story is serious, there are lighthearted moments as well, especially at home with her loving family. The book version was the first choice of the Literature Discussion Group last fall, when group members enjoyed rich discussion as they made a brief entry into Starr's world. We are excited and look forward to sharing similar insights from the film.
This film is available to stream from Amazon on YouTube for $3.99 or on Redbox for $2.99. We also have several copies of the DVD to loan. Contact Allie Shoulders to RSVP for the discussion or to arrange a loan.
