Success Stories

After studying songwriting at university and returning to Suffolk to set up a music tuition business, Georgia Gant finally decided to get serious about her writing dream.

After a couple of years writing novels and learning the ropes, she was chosen by Anna Mainwaring for the WriteMentor 2020 Summer Mentoring Programme and went on to sign with Joanna Moult of Skylark Literary Agency

She’s usually found reading YA, writing YA, watching YA films, or discussing YA ideas with her disinterested rescue dog.

What made you apply for the WriteMentor programme?

After studying music at university, I decided writing novels was something I really wanted to pursue. In 2019, I thought my latest, a YA contemporary titled Guitars, Bras and Heading for the Stars, might be strong enough to get somewhere. I worked on it with the lovely Aisha Bushby during WriteMentor’s Preparing for Submission course, and right around the time that course finished, applications for the 2020 Summer Mentoring Programme opened up. I thought this was an amazing opportunity, and one I could never have afforded without WriteMentor’s free initiative. To my joy, Anna Mainwaring — YA contemporary extraordinaire — saw potential in my novel and chose me for the programme!

Final word from...

Meet our New Team Member

Melissa Welliver | Creative Administrator

Joining us behind the scenes at WriteMentor is Melissa, who's experience in IT, running her own app business, a programming and web-based content company, journalism and excellent administrative skills, made her an ideal person to help us with the day to day running of many elements of WriteMentor.

She is a long-time mentor, volunteering every summer to mentor since our inception in 2018 and has always been keen to help in a voluntary capacity in other ways.

She has many ideas for helping us refine and develop what we do and offer, and will be a big asset for us as we move forward.

Her main responsibilities will be as the main contact when you're emailing WM, and running our Spark Mentoring programme and editing service, as well as helping with the dirty work in the engine room, such as using a hydro-spanner to fix the hyperdrive! Always a rubbish job!

I know everyone will be lovely and welcoming to her as she settles in to her new role.

“I’ve had the absolute pleasure of seeing WriteMentor grow from twitter-pitch seedlings to a full grown community, and I’m thrilled to be getting on board behind the scenes. I can’t wait to get to work on the exciting roster of projects that WriteMentor has to offer!”

Melissa is a speculative Young Adult author represented by Lucy Irvine at Peters, Fraser & Dunlop. Her debut novel, The Undying Tower, will be published by Agora Books in October 2021. It is the first in a Young Adult dystopian trilogy. Melissa has been a mentor for the last three years since WriteMentor’s inception.

Apart from writing, she works as a freelance editor and has several testimonials on her website.
