Music of the Spheres

On 18th – 22nd May, pianist Libby Burgess will be giving daily lunchtime concerts in the nave of St Mary’s. The performances in St Mary’s mark the start of Libby’s 2021 tour of all 48 counties of England, and will be some of the first live music-making in public in the entire country after the current lockdown.

Libby is a cherished member of the St Mary’s community and we’re honoured to be hosting the start of her amazing Project 48. With its peaceful atmosphere and incredible acoustic, St Mary’s is a very special place for music, and these free concerts in St Mary’s will give us the chance to pause and reflect after a difficult year.

Find out more about Project 48

Project 48 will see Libby travelling thousands of miles around the country, raising money for four national musical charities – whose work is needed now more than ever. The music she is playing, J.S. Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier (also known as the “48”), is a masterpiece of Western art, only rarely performed in its entirety. The concerts in St Mary’s mark the start of that epic journey.

The first collection of fully-worked keyboard pieces in all musical keys, The Well-Tempered Clavier is a landmark in music. It also covers a universe of emotions, encompassing music of searing beauty, joy, sadness, spirituality, profundity, and humility. And so we’ve called the concerts in St Mary’s “Music of the Spheres”!

Roland Deller, Development Director

Libby will be performing in St Mary’s on a Faziloli concert grand piano kindly being provided by Jaques Samuel Pianos in London. Also on show in the church when it reopens will be a new exhibition about the stone carvings installed in 2020 based on characters from the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis.

We look forward to welcoming you to St Mary’s for these special events, and we hope that you enjoy the chance to spend a moment of quiet in its beautiful surroundings as the country emerges from lockdown. Appropriate measures will be in place to ensure your safety in St Mary’s including distancing, ventilation and sanitization. Retiring donations will be taken in aid of the four musical charities being supported by Project 48 (find out more about those charities below).

Big Church Clean Up
We are planning a few days of cleaning in the Church on Mon 10th and Tues 11th May 2021, prior to opening the building to visitors again. We'd love to get a team of volunteers together to help make a difference. If you are able to help please get in touch with the church office or just turn up at 10am on either day.
What is Celtic Prayer?
As many of you will know, we have started a new service on a Saturday evening (once a fortnight 7.00-7.30pm). This is a service that is based upon Celtic prayers and we thought you might like to know what Celtic Christianity it is all about…

Where is Celtic Christianity from?
In his book Celtic Christianity, Ian Bradley describes the first Celtic churches as "the early indigenous Christian communities of the British Isles". Celtic Christianity represents a style of Christianity that is said to date back to the earliest days of the Church in Britain. According to Tertullian (AD 155-222), the Good News was preached in Britain and had been received and the Gospel accepted in his lifetime.

The ancient Celtic people who had a strong sense of nature and accepted a deep sense of the spiritual became Christians. It was a simple faith and yet had a depth and it continued to flourish in Highlands and islands of Scotland even after the Romans brought their own understanding of the faith and of worship.

Celtic Christianity has had something of a resurgence in the last 40 years, however scholars continue to debate the historical importance of Celtic Christianity and cast doubts on some of the more 'romantic' ideas which surround it. Nonetheless, it offers access to prayers and worship which speak to our present situation in a meaningful way and allow a deeper connection with God.

What are said to be differences between the faith shared by the Roman Christians and that cherished by the Celts?
Roman Christianity tended to be authoritarian, hierarchical, male dominated, rational and strongly legalistic.

Celtic Christianity celebrated grace and nature as good gifts from God and recognised the sacredness of all creation. It had a love of mysticism and poetry and included women in its leadership. Celtic society was rural, family based and tribal in nature, with each tribe ruled by its own king. Celtic Christianity also expressed a deep concern for the poor.

The contrasts may not have been as stark as are often presented but we can see an emphasis that people are attracted to today.

What does Celtic Christianity offer us today?
  • A genuine love of nature and a passion for God’s creation, which is so important at this time.
  • A sense of closeness between heaven and earth.
  • A love of art and poetry.
  • An emphasis on the Trinity, the Incarnation and the use within worship of early forms of prayer and liturgy.
  • An emphasis on solitude, pilgrimage and mission, and sacred locations.
  • An emphasis on family and kinship ties.
  • There seems to have been greater equality for women.
  • A generous hospitality was an important part of everyday life.
So, if this kind of expression of faith interests you, why not join the little service on a Saturday night?
The next service is Saturday 9th May 2021. Until then why not pray the following Celtic prayer?

‘St. Patrick’s Breastplate’
Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger….

…I bind unto myself the name,
The strong name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same,
The three in one, and One in Three,
Of whom all nature has creation;
Eternal Father, Spirit, Word,
Praise to the Lord of my salvation
Salvation is of Christ the Lord.

Thursday Night Home Group
The "I Am" Sayings of Christ - Lifebuilder Bible Study

The Thursday Night Home Group are starting a new discussion series from 29th April and welcome all who wish to explore the scriptures in a friendly setting.

  • Over 8 short studies we will explore different ways of approaching who Jesus is
  • We'll find new ways to relate to Christ in these discursive sessions
Jesus made some sweeping claims for himself - outrageous but true!

This study guide examines the 'I am' statements, mainly from the Gospel of John. But the eight sessions go beyond a study of ancient words to a consideration of how these claims can transform our lives today. What does it mean for Jesus to say he is the Bread of Life? That he is the Light? What do these dramatic claims tell us about the power and character of Jesus? And how might that impact our lives each day?

An accompanying book can be obtained from Eden Books(£4.97), however sufficient materials will be provided.

The group currently meets over Zoom using the following:Zoom ID: 85791087910 and Passcode: David.

If you're not already benefitting from a home group you are most welcome, contact the church office (stmarys.beverley@gmail.com or 01482 869137) and we'll get details to you.

Prayers
Wednesday 28th April - Friday 7th May 2021
(broadcast each evening on Facebook)

A simple form of evening prayer and candle lighting *

At St Mary's we would like to invite you to join us in a short time of prayer every day at 7pm. It involves lighting a candle and placing it in the window and then saying the following prayers as individuals or as households.  You can join with others in these prayers on our Facebook page.

The Lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen.

Our help is in the name of the Lord
who made heaven and earth.

A period of silence for reflection on the past day may follow.

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

The reading for the day (see below)**

The candle is lit and the following prayer is said
Heavenly Father, accept this burning candle as a sign of faith and love.
Like this candle, bring light into our world
Even as this candle is lit may we know your presence
and be consumed in the warmth of your love.
In your mercy, Lord hear our prayer.

In peace we will lie down and sleep;
for you alone, Lord, make us dwell in safety.

Abide with us, Lord Jesus
for the night is at hand and the day is now past.

As the night watch looks for the morning
so do we look for you, O Christ.

The Lord bless us and watch over us;
the Lord make his face shine upon us and be gracious to us;
the Lord look kindly on us and give us peace. Amen.
