How can we enhance treatment precision in radiotherapy?

At Amsterdam UMC the department of Radiation Oncology has installed 6 newly released ring-based linear accelerators (Varian, Ethos, Palo Alto) at locations in Amsterdam and at Flevoziekenhuis in Almere. These accelerators utilize the latest software, including artificial intelligence. With this design and this software, it is possible to adapt the treatment plan to the daily anatomy of the patient instead of applying the same plan every time. This technique is called online adaptive radiotherapy and it allows for a much more precise treatment which results in less radiation exposure of the healthy surrounding tissue.

Finding the right personalized treatment for patients with hereditary colon cancer

Prof. Evelien Dekker and her team will investigate different methods of treatment and cancer surveillance for people with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). Left untreated, this hereditary condition inevitably leads to colon cancer. Their ultimate goal is to find the right surgical and endoscopic strategy for every single patient with FAP in order to prevent cancer, and to improve the quality of life for patients by reducing unnecessary treatments.

The hunt for new drugs to treat colon cancer peritoneal metastases

Metastasis of colon cancer to the peritoneum, the membrane lining the abdomen, has a poor prognosis despite surgery and chemotherapy. Dr. Maarten Bijlsma has identified the molecular subtype of colon cancer that metastasizes to the peritoneum. In this project, his team will hunt for new effective chemotherapy drugs that exploit vulnerabilities of this subtype.

Helping frail patients with pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal cancers. For elderly or frail patients, surgery or chemotherapy is not an option, leaving only supportive care and symptom management. Dr. Anna Bruynzeel wants to improve outcome for this group of patients by testing if highly focused radiotherapy can improve survival and quality of life.
