Secondary STEM
Update
Welcome to the April edition of Secondary STEM Update. In this edition, you'll find information about:

Great Science Share for Schools event hosted by Professor Brian Cox; Royal Society Summer Science Schools Programme and new animate materials challenge; resources for exploring antimicrobial resistance; CREST resources as part of the curriculum; Royal Society of Chemistry Education Prizes; Institute of Physics DOMAINS CPD programme; and the latest Science Learning Partnerships CPD opportunities.

Professor Brian Cox hosts special Great Science Share for Schools event for 5 to 14-year-olds on climate change and the natural world
In partnership with The Royal Society, Professor Brian Cox, Royal Society Professor of Public Engagement, will answer pupils’ questions about climate change and the natural world at a special event on 15 June 2021. For more information about how to involve your pupils, register for the Great Science Share for Schools.

Summer Science Schools Programme - 8-9 July 2021
Secondary schools can now book to take part in the free sessions being offered by The Royal Society as part of its online Summer Science Schools Programme taking place on the mornings of 8 and 9 July 2021. The programme aims to support teachers to bring science research into their classrooms: providing younger students with an insight into science research and those making it happen; and older students with an opportunity to speak to a wide range of researchers about their work and careers. To book, visit The Royal Society's website.

New cross-curricular animate materials challenge
This new challenge for students from The Royal Society is aimed at primary and secondary schools and is intended to stimulate discussion around the new technology of animate materials. It includes a simple description of animate materials and the three fundamental characteristics that define them (active, adaptive, and autonomous), as well as examples of early animate materials currently being used or developed. The student challenge is to propose ideas, to help create a "library of future materials", of types of animate materials that may exist in the future. For more information, visit The Royal Society website.

Superbugs: Join the Fight!
These free resources for pupils aged 5-14 are funded by Pfizer and explore the issue of antimicrobial resistance, the science behind viruses and pandemics, and the role and importance of vaccination. The content has been updated to help teachers engage their pupils with these topics in the classroom using curriculum-linked resources including:

  • a new launch assembly introducing superbugs, vaccines and viruses, and pandemics in the context of today’s world
  • a new eLearning module to further engage learners with the science behind the pandemic
  • a new competition with prizes, encouraging learners to create their own public health message
  • links to the new Health Education curriculum
  • lessons around superbugs, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and vaccines.
Using CREST resources as part of the curriculum
If you are interested in exploring how you could use CREST resources to support your teaching of the secondary science curriculum, then you might find the video above of a webinar by the British Science Association on that subject worth watching. It uses their latest free mapping resource to show secondary science teachers how they can integrate CREST Award projects into lesson plans to support the teaching of the curriculum.

Remember that CREST Awards are still fully-funded for all London state schools through:
  • the Mayor's London Scientist Programme, which funds Discovery and Bronze CREST Awards for non-selective state schools who have 30%+ pupils eligible for free school meals and/or 75%+ pupils from ethnic minority backgrounds or SEND schools, pupil referral units and alternative providers; and
  • a generous donation from Mewburn Ellis that covers state schools who are not eligible for the Mayor's London Scientist Programme who can apply for fully-funded CREST Awards at any level.
To register your school's interest in delivering fully-funded CREST Awards at any level (to be completed by the end of August 2021) please complete the attached form as soon as possible, as there are also a limited number of £100 grants available, on a 'first come, first served' basis.
Royal Society of Chemistry Education Prizes 2021 - nominations open
Nominations are now open for the Royal Society of Chemistry Excellence in Education Prizes and Horizon Prizes for Education.

The Excellence in Education Prizes celebrate educators in primary, secondary, further education and higher education (including, teachers, technicians and more) and recognise a wide range of skills from curriculum design to effective teaching, and from personal development to working culture.

The Horizon Prizes for Education – new this year – celebrates ground-breaking innovations and initiatives that mark a step-change in science education and highlight recent initiatives that are set to make a real impact within the field of education. These could include teaching programmes or techniques, research breakthroughs, innovative technologies and more.

For more information on the Education Prizes 2021 and to nominate, visit the Royal Society of Chemistry's website - deadline for nominations is 29 June 2021.
DOMAINS Physics CPD programme
The Institute of Physics' free online DOMAINS CPD programme covers all of the domains of Physics over the course of an academic year. Whatever your subject background, whatever age groups you teach and whatever your teaching experience, it offers CPD sessions to meet your needs. Next half-term their focus is on Matter, with CPD sessions available in April and May.
