Fall 2021 Course Registration: Permission Numbers (PNs)

Every semester, CalTeach students must receive a permission number in order to enroll in the following courses (you do not need a PN for EDSTEM 82/82T or UGIS/EDUC C122). You may request PNs below by clicking on the linked course names.


EDUC 130: Knowing & Learning in Mathematics and Science
EDUC 131AC: Classroom Interactions in Science and Mathematics
EDSTEM 187: Project-Based Instruction
HISTORY 138T: History of Science with CalTeach Perspectives Section


Once you receive your PN, you can enter it in the enrollment center. Keep in mind you will only be able to add the course once it's your Phase I or II.

If you're not sure about what class to take next, you can view our course pathways on our website or set up an appointment with a Peer Advisor or our Student Services Coordinator.
On May 3rd, 2021 we will hold our Spring 2021 Virtual Reception at 6PM PST. You are cordially invited to this ceremony where the CalTeach community, along with loved ones, will be honoring this academic year’s graduates and minor/credential recipients. We ask that you formally RSVP for the event as it serves as your official indication of attending.

CalTeach Merced is calling for videos from CalTeach undergrads, mentors and alum talking about “the impact CalTeach has had on your education or life in general.”

We would love to see Berkeley represented in the video compilation that will be shown at the CalTeach 2021 Symposium, so we are offering an additional incentive to Berkeley folks to participate in this in the form of a $10 Amazon gift card from CalTeach Berkeley.

Summer Research Institute
Are you already doing research on campus? Do you expect to continue over the summer? Did you know that we offer the EDSTEM 189 course, that supports a research project and fulfills a requirement for our minor?

If you are working approximately 20 hours per week on research, you may also be eligible for a $2500 Koshland award! Let Kaitlan know if you have questions by emailing kaitlanmaissen@berkeley.edu.
STEM Beyond Summer Internships

Interns work with K-12 students (and sometimes teachers) in summer activities that focus on math, science, and engineering.

Broadening Participation in STEM through Education & Outreach
Tuesday, April 27 at 12-1:30PM PST | Register online

While the US continues to become a more diverse nation, STEM continues to be exclusive to historically minoritized groups, leading to loss of talent and perpetuating systems of class and oppression. Broadening participation within STEM is more critical than ever. Join us and hear how three outstanding researchers—all at different levels of their careers and from various disciplines —have successfully planned, executed, and sustained broadening participation activities into their careers as scientists.

What are their recommendations for young researchers who want to integrate meaningful outreach into their work? What are their recommendations for community partners who wish to collaborate with researchers? What makes a successful partnership? How have they utilized both campus infrastructure and community resources? Come and get knowledge, insights, and advice from those who have built successful, long lasting, and impactful outreach programs. 


Know any high schoolers? Encourage them to submit to the Diversity x Design Poster Contest!

The California Academy of Sciences Creative Studio is excited to launch Diversity x Design: a project to encourage teenagers to apply the tools of the design to express themselves and celebrate diversity in the worlds of design and science.

Feel free to share the attached poster and details, especially:
  • it's a FREE poster contest for Bay Area high school students
  • there are lots of resources, free design tools and inspiration
  • fabulous designer judges will be hosting virtual workshops (register for more info)
  • the poster themes encourage advocacy, imagination, diversity, and a brighter future
  • Prizes will be awarded and winning posters will be exhibited at the Academy

  • The American Association for the Advancement of Science has posted videos of panel sessions from their February Communicating Science Seminar that featured NSF AISL-funded work by Child Trends Inc. and the NOISE project.
     
  • The American Geophysical Union held a webinar on Storytelling 101: Identifying and Crafting Narrative Themes. A recording of the webinar, an infographic summarizing key points, and other materials can be found here. Explore more information from the first webinar of the three-part mini-series on story arcs.
     
  • Watch the MuseumExpert.org webinar “The Post-COVID Museum: What's Next?” by MuseumExpert.org. Six CEOs of informal STEM education institutions reflected on 2020 and described the changes taking place in the museum field.
     
  • The Aspen Institute Science & Society Program hosted Eureka Stories: The Power of Putting Science Center-Stage, with the Marin Theatre Company and Round House Theatre. The event recording is available here.
     
  • Read the synthesis of the STEM for All Multiplex theme of the month, Including Individuals with Disabilities in STEM Courses, Research, and Careers. Highlights of key points and recommendations for researchers, teacher leaders, and administrators are included. A recording of the event can be found here.
Summer Job Opportutnity at Cal ATDP: Summer Online Teaching in Computer Science!
 
For summer 2021, UC Berkeley Academic Talent Development Program is looking for an instructor for the computer science class Programming in Java (AP-aligned; two sections). These classes will be taught online via Zoom.

Schedule
Program dates: June 21 - July 30, 2021 (6 weeks)
Class schedule: Monday, Wednesday & Friday (18 class meetings)
Daily schedule: 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for morning section; 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for afternoon section
Pay:  $3800 per section (2 sections, so $7600 for teaching both sections) 

Student Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra I or Integrated Math 1 required. Completion of an introductory computer science course recommended. For students who want to master object-oriented programming. Coding experience recommended but not required. Covers the majority of topics in AP Computer Science A in six weeks. With additional self-study and review, students will be prepared to take the AP exam in May.
